Fifty-six leaves (mainly non-consecutive) from a breviary (pars estivalis) compiled for use in the diocese of Agen, in France, with music.
- Scope & Content:
-
The manuscript in its present state contains parts of the following offices:-
(1) Temporale, 7th-22nd Sundays after Pentecost, ff. 1-12;-(2) Sanctorale, SS. Ambrose and Isidore (4 Apr.)-St Romanus of Blaye (24 Nov.), ff. 13- 52;-(3) Commune sanctorum, ff. 53-55. Included in the Sanctorale are offices for the following saints, mostly having close associations with Agen:-
St Phoebadius (26 Apr.), f. 15; St Vincent, with the rubric 'Incipit passio sancti Vincentii leuite et martiris que apud agenensem urbem celebratur quinto idus lunii cuius corpus in ecclesia de manso honorifice est sepultum' (9 June), f. 20; St Louis (25 Aug.), f. 27; St Faith (6 Oct.), f. 32; St Dulcidius (16 Oct.), f. 34; and St Caprasius (20 Oct.), with octave, ff. 35-36.
For the last-named the antiphons and lessons are similar to those in the offices for St Caprasius and SS. Primus and Felicianus as printed (pp. 261-265) by J. Labrunie, 'Les livres liturgiques de l'église d'Agen', Recueil des Travaux de la Société d'Agriculture, de Sciences et d'Art d'Agen, 2e série, i, 1860, pp. 217-294, where other manuscript breviaries of similar use are noticed. Labrunie's text derives from the unique copy (in the municipal library at Agen) of the printed Breviarium Aginense (Limoges, 1526). A microfilm of this book is in the Department of MSS., numbered Microfilm 478. See also Brit. Mus. Quart., v, 1930-1931, pp. 88-89.
Written, in double columns, presumably in the diocese of Agen. Music of square and diamond-shaped notation on a stave of four red lines. On f. 56b scribal colophon in red: 'Verum scriptoris si scire nomen velletis oportet si ne mora quod vertatur sutogima' [Amigotus]. Titles in red. Minor initials alternately red and blue with counterchanged pen-work decoration. Major initials illuminated (gold and colours) and with partial bar-borders (foliage, grotesques, birds, animals), containing foliage with grotesques or (ff. 13-55 passim) miniatures (26) of Saints, etc., including a representation (f. 36) of St Caprasius with bishop's mitre, for which cf. Labrunie, op. Cit., p. 236.
