POCKET-BOOK, with enclosures (ff. 169-175), of Henry Walter Bates, the naturalist, used during his travels in Brazil, of which he gave an account in The Naturalist on the River Amazons, 2 vols., 1863; 1848-1859. Apart from brief notes of journeys from Ega to Obydos, 3-18 Feb. 1859 (ff. 40b-39b, reversed), and from Para homewards, 2-14 June 1859 (ff. 46b- 47), the entries are confined to business records such as accompts, receipts of parcels, and consignments of collections. An extract from f. 26b is printed by E. Clodd in his memoir of Bates prefixed to the 1892 edition of his work. The enclosures from the end pockets of the volume (now ff. 169-175 and separately bound as 42138 B) contain vocabularies in Bates's hand of native Indian words, etc. Paper; ff. 175. Small octavo (42138A) and quarto (42138B). A.D. 1848- 1859.
