MAP of the British Isles and the coasts of Northern France and the Low Countries, showing proposed routes for a French invasion of Great Britain, consisting of landings at Hull (from four points in the Netherlands), at Pevensey (from four points in Normandy and Picardy), and at Galway, Bantry Bay, and Cork (all from Brest); 1796. Notes on the map indicate the places of embarcation and landing of earlier invading forces crossing the Channel in either direction. The plan as a whole does not correspond exactly with any of the projects considered by the Directory in 1796 (cf. E. Desbrière, Projets et Tentatives de Débarquement aux Iles Britanniques, 1793-1805, i, 1900). Entitled 'Seconde Copie pour être deposée au Bureau topographique de Plans et Cartes Ce 7 Brumaire an 5 [=28 Oct. 1796; wrongly identified on the map as 7 Nov. 1801]. Par Ordre du Directoire Executif Le Secretaire General.' Across the top left-hand corner is the note: 'Le dit Depôt a été fait le neuf Brumaire An Cinq [=30 Oct. 1796]-Porty.' Linen; 1 ft. 10 in. x 2 ft. 3½ in. A.D. 1796. War Office stamp of the Quartermaster-General's Dept., Intelligence Branch, 31 May 1878. Presented by the Geographical Section of the War Office.
