Origin: Netherlands, S. (Leuven)
Provenance:
The Premonstratensian abbey of St Mary in Parc, near Leuven, in the diocese of Liege, written in 1148, during the abbacy of Philippe (1142-1165): colophon in Add MS 14788, 'Anno millesimo centesimo quadragesimo octavo Incarnationis dominice Scriptus est liber iste In honore Sancte Marie in Parcho' (f. 197r); and colophon in Add MS 14789, 'Anno ab incarnatione domini millesimo centesimo quadrasimo octavo Scriptus est liber iste In honore Sancte Marie in Parcho Si quis fum abstulerit anathema sit' (f. 198r).
Payne and Foss, London booksellers: their catalogue no. 68, p. 11, as 'BIBLIA, SIVE VETUS ET NOVUM TESTAMENTUM EX VERSIONE ET CUM PRÆFATIONIBUS S. HIERONYMI, 3 vol.Anno millesimo centesimo quadragesimo octavo, incarnationis dominicæ scriptus est liber iste in honore Sanctæ Mariæ in Parcho ; si quis eum abstulerit anathema sit. This Bible as appears by the above Colophon, was written in the year 1148, for the Monastery of the Park, near Louvain, where it remained till recently. It is in perfect preservation, and is ornamented with many splendid and elaborate illuminations ; and is mentioned by Sander AS HAVING BEEN EXAMINED BY THE DEPUTIES OF THE COUNCIL OF TRENT FOR THE VULGATE EDITION. A most curious Historical Chronicle is inserted at the beginning, in which the remarkable events of the world are brought down to the year 1310. It may certainly, as containing this Chronicle, the date of its scription, the curious illuminations, and for the importance of its text, be cited as one of the most valuable Latin Bibles brought into this country for many years, 157l. 10s. - - Fol.'; purchased from them.
Purchased from Payne and Foss by the British Museum on 16 November 1843 together with eighty-one other manuscripts for £840.
