f. 1r: An added 13th-century ownership inscription, now partially obscured or smudged.
ff. 1v-2r: St Jerome, Epistula ad Damasum papam (Epistle to Pope Damasus I).
ff. 2r- 117r: The Four Gospels, with readings for major feasts marked throughout.
f. 117v: List of Gospel lections, incomplete.
Decoration:
1 full-page miniature in colours and gold, with a full border (f. 4v): Christ in Majesty surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists in the upper register, and Sts Peter and Paul holding closed books, with two tonsured monks in supplication beneath their feet in lower register.
4 large miniatures of the Evangelists in colours and gold, with a full border: (f. 6r: St Matthew; f. 38v: St Mark; f. 56v: St Luke; f. 91v: St John).
2 large historiated initials in colours and gold: Initial ‘I’(ntravit) composed of the Virgin Mary as orante (f. 72r); initial 'I'(ngressus) composed of the figure of Ecclesia, crowned and holding a sceptre and a shield (f. 81v).
24 large initials in gold and/or silver and colours, mainly on blue grounds with clasps and foliate forms, at the beginning of prologues and readings for particular feasts (ff. 1v, 5v, 6v, 7r, 9r, 22r, 23v, 32v, 36r, 37r (two initials), 37v, 56r, 57v, 58r, 58v, 59r, 59v, 88v, 90r, 93r, 93v, 107v, 109v).
Numerous smaller (2-3 lines) initials in blue with red pen-work decoration, in red with blue pen-work decoration, or red with reserved designs or pen-work decoration in red.
Silk curtains in different colours, stitched only on one side, have been added in front of the full-page miniature, most of the miniatures of the evangelists, the historiated initials and numerous large (e.g. f. 6r) and small initials (e.g. f. 7r).
Small initials in red, some with pen-work decoration.
Capitals in brown. Rubrics and highlighting of words in red. Decorated quire signatures in brown ink.

Dimensions: 330 x 190 mm (written area 235 x 130 mm).
Foliation: ff. 117 ( + 2 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves and 2 unfoliated modern parchment flyleaves at the beginning + 2 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the end).
Decorated quire signatures in roman numerals (e.g., ff. 12v, 20v, 28v, 36v).
Coloured silk curtains are sewn into the manuscript, covering most miniatures and many illuminated initials.
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: Pre-1600. Blind-stamped 15th- or 16th-century pigskin over wooden boards; remains of metalwork clasps; gilt fore-edge.

Provenance:
The Benedictine monastery of Sts. Peter and Paul, Erfurt: ownership inscriptions, 'Liber sancti Petri in Erefocdia' (f. 1r); "Liber sci Petri in erpeffurt' (f. 5r), in a 13th-century hand.
Inscribed: 'Testamentum Novum Evangelia 12th Century', in a 19th-century hand (f. 1r).
Purchased by the British Museum from Payne and Foss, booksellers, on 16 November 1843, as lot 170, for £31, 10 shillings: inscription (though giving the wrong year), ‘Purchased of Payne and Foss, 1844’ (f. [iv recto]).
