Copy of ‘Considerations touching a war with Spain’, by Francis Bacon, Viscount St Alban (1561–1626), Lord Chancellor, politician and philosopher. Written in 1624 and first published in 1629. This copy addresses Prince Charles as ‘the King’, indicating that it postdates the accession of Charles I (27 March 1625).

ff. 1r-39r: Francis Bacon, ‘Considerations touching a war with Spain’. Addressed ‘To the Kinge’, i.e. Charles I (1600–1649), king of England, Scotland and Ireland. Beginning ‘Your highness hath an Emperiall Name’, and ending ‘the ballanceinge of the Forces betweene the Kinges Ma[jes]tie and the Kinge of Spaine yf a Warre must followe. Finis’.
