Catholicon Anglicum
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript contains an imperfect and incomplete copy of the Catholicon Anglicum. The only known complete copy of this text is Add MS 89074.
The text opens imperfectly, part way through the entry for 'to Accuse' (f. 1r) (the first complete entry is 'an Accuser').
The text ends imperfectly, part way through the entry for 'Wrathe' (f. 142v). A few words of the rest of this entry and of those that follow are visible on the small fragment remaining of f. 143.
The text is also incomplete. Gaps of several lines have been left throughout the text, ready for further entries to be added. In some locations, the opening two letters have been inscribed on each line of these gaps.
The headwords are arranged largely in alphabetical order, A-W. For a detailed description of the organisation of the Catholicon Anglicum text, see Add MS 89074.
The text is written throughout in a reddish-brown ink. The headwords are rubricated inconsistently: mostly with a red opening initial, and rarely with underlining. There is no other rubrication in this volume. There are no chapter headings.
There are fine pencil markings (ticks, question marks, occasional annotations) throughout the volume. These are quite probably those of Sidney J.H. Herrtage, the editor of the Catholicon Anglicum, who collated this volume with Add MS 89074 (at that time in the possession of the Monson family).
The manuscript's contents are as follows:
ff. 1r-7r: A.
