Title:

Collection of medical tracts and excerpts in Irish

Scope & Content:

Medical tracts and excerpts taken from various sources.

A detailed description of the Irish material is provided by O'Grady and Flower, Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts, i, pp. 262-80.

ff. 8r-14v: Tract derived from John of Gaddesden's Rosa Anglicana, book I, chapter 19 ('De passionibus stomachi'). Divided into eight sections by the Irish translator.

f. 14v: A text on cupping.

ff. 14v-15r: Prologue and the first few lines of the 'Ivory Casket' of Hippocrates. Incomplete.

f. 15v: Short notes on how different types of medicine work, how different senses are gratified, how different senses are irritated, a list of serious illnesses.

ff. 16r-46r: List of treatments against various ailments. Over eighty section with rubricated heading in Latin.

ff. 46v-53v: Text on the humours and materia medica.

ff. 53v-54v: Short tract on the humours, drawing on Galenus.

ff. 54v-55r: Short tract on making syrups.

ff. 55r-58r: Tract on syrups. Incomplete.

f. 58v: Tract on cautery.

ff. 58v-59v: Tract on lithotomy. According to O'Grady it was intended for a translation of Gaddesden's 'De operacione cum ferro in lapide' (Rosa Anglicana, III, tract. v, section 12). First twelves lines of f. 59v are a single column. Then it splits into two.

f. 59v: Short recipe against hardness and swelling of testicles.

ff. 59v-60v: Text on wounds on the side. Incomplete.

f. 61r: Strange material in Latin and Irish: A note on love as something which is experienced through the senses; scribal colophon in Irish; a note that all things are made for humans; a note on letters keeping memory going; a prayer for God's help; note that if the order is observed, everything is; a warning not to take joy in a wife or child or to complain about anything in this life. This material is a later addition, dated 1588.

f. 61v: Phlebotomy man, with descriptions of various veins marked on the diagram.

ff. 62r-69v: Tract on urine.

f. 69v: Scribal colophon.

A later hand has written in English on blank leaves at the beginning of the manuscript:ff. 1r-v: Prognostication oin English for people who fall sick on different days of the month.

ff. 1v-2r: List of materia medica divided into groups including waters, oils, corrosives, simples, syrups and conserves divided into tables.

ff. 2r-7v: A number of medical recipes.

Text inside the upper cover. Some text lost due to fading and staining. A list of medical tools/implements and some notes on their use.

Illustration of a man to show the location of various blood vessels (f. 61v). Table with red knot design (f. 69). Marginal text boxes in red (ff. 63r, 63v, 64r, 64v, 65r, 65v, 66v, 67r, 68r, 68v). Dimensions: 225 x 155mm (written area 170-215 x 115-150mm, in two columns).

Foliation: ff. 69 (+ 1 unfoliated paper flyleaf at the beginning + 1 at the end).

Binding: Post-1600: Black leather on wooden boards, blind tooled with the remains of clasps on the upper cover.

Script: Irish.

Dáibhí Ó Cearnaigh: One of the principal scribes. He gives his name in a colophon at f. 69v.

Cairbre: Another scribe. Does not give his surname, but it is possibly the same as his colleague, Dáibhí Ó Cearnaigh.

Provenance:

John Beaton (Eoin Mac Beatha): The manuscript was written for John Beaton (ff. 69v).

James Beaton (Sem mac Ruaighri mic Néill [...]mhaeig Bhethahacchadh): Gives his name in a scribal colophon at f. 61, which is dated 1588.

John Beaton (Eoin Maig Bheatha): Wrote ff. 1r-7v, and a gave his name at f. 69v. His gives the date 1710 at f. 7v and 1708 at f. 69v.

Provenance:

Thomas Rodd the Younger (b. 1796, d. 1849), London bookseller: Sold the manuscript to the British Museum on 9 August 1845 (see note inside the lower cover). As Rodd sold another Mac Beatha medical manuscript to the British Museum, Add MS 15403, it is possible that the current manuscript also came through Sir William Bentham. Bentham was Ulster King of Arms from 1820 until his death, and Keeper of the Record of Dublin Castle before that.
