Roll of New Year’s Gifts given by and to King James I, 1 Jan 1605, at the Palace of Westminster
- Scope & Content:
-
Roll of New Year’s Gifts given by and to King James I, 2 Jac. I (i.e. 1 Jan 1605) at the Palace of Westminster.
The roll is faded in places, and the recto, the list of New Year’s gifts of plate by the King, is incomplete. Evidently the very first membrane of recipients has been lost: Earls and Viscounts as groups, and some of the Bishops, have been lost (14 bishops remain, starting with Norwich).
Recto: List of New Year’s Gifts of gilt plate given by the King, ordered by rank and status. The first membrane has been lost, so it opens with 14 bishops, headed by Norwich. To these reciprocal gifts are added a group of Free Gifts (additional to the reciprocal gifts already listed). The total of these New Year’s Gifts by the king comes to 2,714⅜ ounces.
There are also sundry gifts given 24 June 1604-25 June 1605. These include christening and marriage gifts, the bejewelled insignia of Garter and George bestowed on Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton, and diplomatic gifts. A number of the diplomatic gifts, some lavish in both weight: for instance, the Constable of Castile received 8,266¾ ounces of plate, whilst Jean Richardot, President of the Brussels Privy Council, received 4,006¾ ounces of plate. The objects which make up these lavish gifts are described in rich detail.
Signed at the foot by King James, Edward Carye (Carey), Master and Treasurer of His Majesty’s Jewels, and four other officials.
Verso: Gifts given to the King, ordered by rank. The vast majority of the payments down to, and including, those by knights are recorded as ‘in gold’. Gifts from ‘Gentlemen’ (their positions rarely stated but many are probably household functionaries including medical men, artisan, craftsmen and musicians) are more varied gifts, for instance marzipan or perfumed gloves. The herald William Segar gives a book covered with velvet entitled ‘of the exchanging of the Armes of great Brytaine until this yeare of the Kinges Majesties Reigne that now is’, whilst Thomas bastard gives a book covered with velvet called Magna Britannia. Dorothy Spekard gives two lawn handkerchiefs edged with Venice gold and silver and one cutwork handkerchief.
The total of all the money given is £1,171. 13s. 4d.
Signed by King James I at the head and foot by James and at the foot by Edward Carye (Carey), Master of the Jewel House, and four other officials.
