1. "THE BRAMINE'S JOURNAL" a journal addressed by Laurence Sterne to Eliza Draper, wife of Daniel Draper, of Bombay, after her departure for India, and extending from 13 April to 4 Aug. [1767]. It was then discontinued, on the return of Mrs. Sterne from France, but a postscript (partly torn away) was added on 1 Nov. Holograph. ff. 1-41. At the beginning is a note by the author (apparently written with a view to publication) stating that the names of "Yorick" and "Draper," "Bramin" and "Bramine," are fictitious and the whole translated from a French MS., being "a Diary of the miserable feelings of a person separated from a lady for whose society he languished." Under 17 June (f. 25 b) is the entry: "I have brought your name Eliza and picture into my work [The Sentimental Journey, 1768, in his Works, ed. J. P. Browne, 1873, vol. ii., p. 276], where they will remain when you and I are at rest for ever," etc. For letters to the same lady preceding this Journal (which is called a "continuation," f. 1), see Works, as above, vol. iv., pp. 259-280. Included also are the following letters, etc., relating to Sterne's relations with Mrs. Draper:-
2. L. Sterne to [Commodore William] James, afterwards Knt. and Chairman of the East India Company, and Anne, his wife; Coxwould, 10 Aug. 1767, York, 28 Dec. 1767. They are nos. xcviii. and cix. of Sterne's printed Letters, 1775, reprinted in his Works, as above, vol. iv., pp. 299, 319 (nos. cv., cxx.), where, however, they are given with some omissions and alterations and the incorrect dates of 13 Aug. and 23 Dec. fr. 42, 44.
3. Draft of a letter from L. Sterne to [Daniel Draper]; [1767 ?]. f. 46.
4. E[liza] Draper to Anne James, on her relations with Sterne and his wife and daughter; Bombay, 15 Apr. 1772. f. 48.
5. W[illiam] M[akepeace] Thackeray to T. W. Gibbs; Kensington, 31 May, 12 Sept. 1851. The second letter, written after reading the above journal, contains severe strictures on Sterne's character. ff. 72, 74.
6. "Yorick's letters to Eliza" (viz., ed. Browne, nos. lxxxi.-xc.), being No. 43 of the Literary Miscellany, Ludlow, 1799, 12mo. f. 77. Paper; ff. 94. Folio. Bequeathed by Thomas Washbourne Gibbs, Esq.
