CORRESPONDENCE and papers of Sir Henry Spelman, the antiquary; 1600-1641. With additional matter to 1660. Three volumes. Paper. Folio. With the exception of letters to his son John when a youth, the correspondence is with English and foreign scholars, and chiefly relates to Spelman's Concilia and other works. In Vol. I. (ff.24 b,29,31,34) a Henry (Spelman), nephew of Sir Henry, is mentioned as about to sail for Virginia. Probably he was the Henry Spelman who wrote a "Relation of Virginia," published in 1872. The latter first went to Virginia in 1609, and, after more than a year's captivity among the Indians, returned to England with Capt. Argall. A letter signed H.S., written from Toulon in 1619 (f. 61), is also probably from the same. Included in Vol. III. are papers connected with a royal commission on legal fees, etc., 1623-1636, of which Sir Henry was a member. At the beginning of Vol. I. are four engraved portraits of him, by Rob. White, Will. Faithorne, etc. The collection formerly belonged to Dawson Turner and to the Rev. William E. Buckley. It was bound by the former; and in the first cover of Vol. I. were inserted specimens of the seals of Spelman's correspondents. The contents have now been re-arranged.
