Origin and provenance of f. 2:
The Benedictine Cathedral Priory of St Peter, St Paul and St Swithin, Winchester: the chronicle was written here in the 11th century.
The Augustinian priory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Southwick, Hampshire: with MS Cotton Otho B x, ff. 55, 58 and 62, this leaf was part of Cotton Otho B xi. It was perhaps annotated by William Lisle, who borrowed the manuscript before 23 April, 1631 (see Ker, 'Membra Disiecta (1939)). but was no longer part of the manuscript at the time of Wanley's catalogue (Humphrey Wanley, Librorum Veterum Septentrionalium Catalogus (Oxford, 1705)).
Thomas Tanner, (b. 1674, d. 1735), bishop of St Asaph and antiquary, inscribed 'Ex Biblioteca cl. T. Tanner (f. 2r).
Provenance of f. 7:
(?) Edward Rede, bought by him in 1639 from Bryget Reynor, widow: a note on f. 8r.
Provenance of ff. 11,12:
Johannes Lowe, an ?Augustinian cannon of Canterbury Cathedral (fl. 1422): inscription in the upper margin of f. 11r: 'Libri Epistolarum Sidonii pro nova libraria london per me f. Johannem Lowe'.
Provenance of ff. 30, 31:
A draft of an indenture of the apprenticeship of Raffe Snellym, of Yoxforthe to Margaret Borrowe and Edmund Horringe her son, of the same town, copied in the lower margins in a hand of the 16th century (f. 30r, 31v).
Provenance of ff. 37, 38:
Thomas Martin (d. 1771), antiquary of Palgrave, his name inscribed (f. 37v) and a note in his hand recording his discovery of the leaf in Rickinghalle church, Suffollk (f. 38r).
Francis Hugson: inscribed with his name in a hand of the ?18th-cantury (f. 37v).
Provenance of all parts:
Thomas Astle (b. 1735, d.1803), archivist and collector of books and manuscripts, probably collected and bound together by him (he also owned more substantial fragments from two manuscripts, now Stowe 31); his sale, Puttick's, 19 June, 1894, lot 121; purchased by the British Museum for £35.
