MISCELLANEOUS historical papers, 1642-1817, chiefly collected by T. Astle. They include many letters to and from the Earl of Sandwich, while Secretary of State (1763-1765), and to and from Richard Phelps, Under Secretary. Among them are:-
1. Warrant from Charles I. to Matthew Brodley, Paymaster-general of the Army, for payments to various regiments; Oatlands, 16 Nov.
18 Chas. I. [1642]. With sign manual. f. 1.
2. Letter unsigned, and without address, evidently from an Englishman, from Edinburgh, oil the attitude of the Scotch to Charles II.: ". . . Its now (among many) become ordinary discourse, yt better ye King not come at all, yn yt not a changed man, however otherwise he should seemingly comply or tender satisfaction to us and indeed, however particular interests and affection swayt most men to a closure with him, thow upon very easy termes, yet . . . methinks I see heer a tide against ye tide, a streame against ye streame, moving strongly, yea prevaylingly, thow but by a very few and by insensible degrees," etc., and giving details of the appointment of the Committee of the Army; Ed[inburgh], 8 Jan. 3. Two letters, signed W. J., to -, on public affairs in Scotland, more particularly the movements of Montrose, the position of the King with regard to Scotland, and the attitude of the Earl of Argyll; Edinburgh, 15 Jan. 1649 [50], Carlisle, 22 Jan. 1649[50]. ff. 5, 7.
4. Letter from "Philip Howard to Lord Aubigny" [? Philip Thomas Howard, Cardinal in 1675, to Lodovick Stuart, Seigneur d' Aubigny, Cardinal in 1665], urging him to come to his native country "in order to your owne concernments as the good of many more and in perticular those of our persuasion here"; London, 30 Aug. 1660. f. 16. This and art. 5 are copies in the hand of Isaac Dorislaus, of the Post Office, the letters having no doubt been opened while passing through the post.
5. Letter from - to -, "The Act of Indemnity is past, but we are excepted, and only referd to a subsequent Act. God knowes when that will passe," etc.; London, 30 Aug. 1660. The endorsement "Philip Howard to the Lord Aubigny" refers to the previous letter, neither Howard nor Aubigny being mentioned in the Act of Indemnity. f. 18.
6. Certificate of the Commissioners for carrying out the Act of Uniformity, as to the comparison of the Liturgy with the original in the Tower; 13 Dec. 1662. Copy. f. 20.
7. Warrant from William III. to Richard [Jones], Earl of Ranelagh, Paymaster General of the Forces, for a payment to John [Churchill], Earl of Marlborough, "due to the third troop of Horse Guards and Grenadiers under his Command"; Whitehall, 31 May, 1690. Signed. f. 22.
8. "Douze Secrettes Articles Represantée (sic) a Sa Majeste par Capt. Isaac Delestrilles": a farrago of nonsense presented to Queen Anne, consisting of "sept articles pour les faire punir et Banir et Reformer de dedans Tous ses Estats, et cinq articles pour luy donner des sommes inmanses"; circ. 1713. f. 24.
9. Notes on the trial of Francis Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester, in the hand of Thomas Parker, Earl of Macclesfield, Lord Chancellor; May, 1723. f. 34. Followed (f. 79) by the speech of Bishop Atterbury at the Bar of the House of Lords, 11 May, 1723. Printed.
10. "A Justification of His Royal Highness the Duke's [of Cumberland] conduct in regard to his retreat to Stade, and signing the Convention [of Closter Seven]. A.D. 1757." The Convention was signed 10 Sept. 1757. Followed by the minute of the Cabinet Council relative to the rupture of the Convention, 7 Oct. 1757 (cf. Add. 32,875, f. 226). Copies. ff. 89, 90.
11. Précis of Correspondence between the Duke of Newcastle and the Earl of Hardwicke on the matter of the subsidy for carrying on the war in Germany, which led to the Duke's resignation; 7, 15 May, 1762. From Add. 32,938 it would appear that the letter of the Duke was addressed to the Duke of Devonshire (f. 105), while the letter of Lord Hardwicke is dated 10 May (f. 145). f. 99.
12. Narrative of the transactions between Great Britain and Spain with regard to the part the latter took in the negotiations between Great Britain and France, "as the affair appears from the papers deliver'd to both houses of parliament, 9 Jan. 1762." f. 101.
