Title:: CORRESPONDENCE and papers of the families of Brawne, Mariett and West, who held in succession (circ. 1608, circ. 1662, post 1734) the manor of Alscot in Preston-on-Stour, co. Glouc., on the borders of cos. Warwick and Worcester; 1065-1813. They are connected more particularly with James West (ob. 1772), Secretary to the Treasury (1741-1762), M.P. for St. Alban's (1741- 1768), and President of the Royal Society, former owner of the Burghley Papers and other MSS. in the Lansdowne collection, which at his death were purchased for the Earl of Shelburne. A large proportion of the letters and documents in Vols. I., III. appear to be papers which in some way escaped inclusion in the sale.
