LAUDERDALE PAPERS. Supplement to the collections in Add. MSS. 23,108-23,138, 23,242-23,251, etc., of which selections were published by O. Airy (Camden Soc., 1884). Besides original official correspondence, etc., of John Maitland, 2nd Earl and 1st Duke of Lauderdale, Secretary of State in Scotland, 1661-1682, they contain several original papers of Sir William Maitland of Lethington, Secretary of State under Mary, Queen of Scots, and papers of other members of the family. The names of all the writers will be found in the index. The more important contents include:-

Has given the Queen of England's messages to his Queen, who is very well disposed to her. The Queen has had a fall from a horse, but the letters from England have been her best medicine.
