CHRONICLE of English History from the Creation to 1225, in Latin: the same compilation of which the latter part was used by Walter of Coventry (see Stubbs, preface to Rolls edition), and which is preserved in Cotton MS. Vitellius D. xiii. (partly burnt), and in a at Oxford (Magd. Coll. 36). It differs, however, from all these in beginning, not with the year 1002, but with the complete work of Marianus-Florence. The chief components are therefore:-(a) Marianus Scotus, supplemented by Florence of Worcester, derived from a text akin to Lambeth MS. 42 (see Thorpe's edition of Florence) originating apparently at Abingdon (see especially the entry for 948), but including also, besides the continuation of Florence to 1131, a portion (1132-1154) of the work of Henry of Huntingdon. Besides the whole of these works, there are a few extracts from Geoffrey of Monmouth and Hugo of Fleury, notes on bishops and geographical notices. f. 3;-(b) The chronicle known by the name of Abbot Benedict of Peterborough, probably taken from Cotton MS. Julius A. xi. f. 166;-(c) Part of the chronicle of Roger of Hoveden, comprising the years 1181- 1201. f. 199;-(d) The Barnwell chronicle (College of Arms MS. no. 10) for the years 1155-1169, 1177-1180, 1202-1225. ff. 165, 198, 292 b. A few extracts from William of Malmesbury also occur throughout. Imperfect, the first two leaves being much injured and the last four or five almost totally destroyed by damp. The text proves that the MS. cannot be derived from the Cotton or Magdalen Mss., while it may possibly be their origin. It also appears nearly certain that this (and not Cotton) MS. Julius A. xi.) was the MS. from which extracts were forwarded by the Croyland monks to the king, in 1292 (Palgrave, Documents Illustrating the History of Scotland, i. p. 77. In the margin are various notes in 14th and 15th cent. hands. Among the latter is under the year 495 (f. 87b): "Circa hec tempora incepit regnum Orientalium Anglorum sub Vffa, a quo omnes Orientales Anglos vocamus quos nunc Sicanos seu Sykeys vocamus." Under 716 and 756 are notes in a 14th cent. hand (ff. 101 b, 103 b) recording the foundation of Croyland. At the end are mutilated copies of several documents, viz.: (a) Letter from the English archbishops and bishops to Alexander IV., in 1259, concerning the Templars and Hospitallers. Beg. "Lignum censetur." f. 311;-(b) Quitclaim by Thomas filius Lamberti de Multon to Croyland Abbey of lands between the Welland at Brotherhouse and the Nene. f. 312;-(c) Two fines touching the same lands, circ. 1277. f. 312;-(d) King John's Bull of submission to the Pope, Oct. 1213 (Foedera, Record ed., i. 115). f. 313;-(e) Two charters of the Prior of Spalding, touching agreements with Croyland, circ. 1280. f. 314. Vellum (ff. 1, 2 paper); ff. 315. XIIIth cent. Ornamental initials in colours. Belonged to Croyland Abbey (ante 1292, v. supra), see f. 3, "Liber Croylandie"; afterwards (according to a note by M. Johnson on f. 1) to Sir Richard Ogle, of Pinchbeck and Ayscoughfee Hall, co. Linc. (ob. 1627), whose library descended to Johnson (or at least "what Dr. Bentley did not purloyn for Bp. Stillingfleet, while he was my Uncles Tutor, or my Mother dispose of"). Bookplate of Maurice Johnson, 1735 (sale-cat. 1898, lot 1016 14 X 9 ½ in.
