"In isto libello continentur processus et placita de communi itinere domini Regis, et de itinere foreste eiusdem Regis et eciam plures et diuerse irrotulaciones et munimenta. breuia et alia notabilia. et memoranda statum monasterij beate Marie de Nouo Loco in Shirewode concernencia. et in facto executa et expedita ab anno regni Regis Edwardi tercij a conquestu tercio: vsque ad annum eiusdem xxxij. Et eciam diuersi processus super exoneracione auciliorum domini Regis. de nona garbarum, vellerum, et agnorum et scutagiorum et, aliorum reddituum de haya. Et diuerse assise. Que omnia per ordinem postea reperientur. singulis suis in locis conscripta. ad informacionem et propter euidenciam futurorum. per Hugonem de Colyngham, quondam priorem dicti monasterij conscripta, ordinata, et executa, etc." f. 3. Hugh de Colyngham was elected Prior in 1349, and resigned in 1356 (Harl. MSS. 6959, f. 142; 6960, f. 30 b). Ch. lvi. ends on f. 145 b; and the next few leaves are filled with additions, in various 15th cent. hands, including (f. 147 b) "Tituli et diuerse euidencie de ecclesia de Hawte Hoknall" [Ault- Hucknall, co. Derby], and (f. 150 b) a confirmation, in 1307, of a composition made in 1179 between the church of West Markham and the chapel of Tuxford. At f. 151 b is the inscription, by the original scribe, "Iste liber est sancte Marie de Nouo Loco in Shirewode, quem dominus Willelmus de Baukwell, Prior [1415-22] eiusdem loci, de nouo fecit scribi. . . . Et scriptus est per fratrem Robertum de Sheffeld suppriorem eiusdem loci . quorum anime in pace: in pace (sic) Dei requiescant. Amen." Vellum; ff. 15l. Early XVth cent. On f. 2 "John Byron of Newstede, esquier, ys the trewe owner of this present booke, per me W. B." (16th cent.). This is no doubt the son of Sir John Byron (to whom Newstead was granted in 1540: see Dugdale, Mon. Angl., vol. vi. pt. i. p. 473), and great-grandfather of the 1st Lord Byron. At the beginning is a letter from Richard Farmer, Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, dated 18 Jan. 1771. From this, and from a note on f. 2, signed "R[ichard] B[yro]n," it appears that the MS. remained at Newstead (though apparently unknown, since Tanner does not mention it in his Notitia Monastica) until the library was "furbish'd up" about 1770; that it was then "turn'd out of better company," and that it came into the hands of a Nottingham bookseller, and afterwards into those of Farmer, who gave it to his brother-in-law Richard Byron, 3rd son of the 4th Lord Byron (see Nichols, Leicestershire, vol. iv. pt. ii., 1811, p. 950). Sotheby's sale-cat. 21-26 Mar. 1898, lot 1188. 8 1/8 X 5 ½ in.
