CORRESPONDENCE of Pierre François Le Courayer, canon in the Augustinian liouse of Sainte Geneviève, author of a work in defence of the validity of Anglican ordination, the censures upon which compelled him to take refuge in England in Jan. 1728; 1727-1728. In French. The contents consist of:-(l) Original letters addressed to him after his escape by a friend in Paris; 27 Jan.-7 July., 1728. f. 2;-(2) Extracts, made by the same friend, from Le Courayer's own letters to various persons previous to his flight; 3 Sept. 1727-6 Jan. 1728. f. 14. The name of Le Courayer's correspondent [possibly the Abbé de la Vigne, see MSS. Ste. Genev. 1965-7] is throughout carefully concealed, every precaution being used to screen those who assisted in his escape. The letters are addressed to Le Courayer under the name of "Monsieur Langley," and his friends are alluded to under the names of the streets in which they lived or are otherwise disguised. Thus "M. de Bétizy" stands for the Abbé Louis Élies Girardin, "Le P. P." for the chanoine Claude Prévost, "M. de La Jussienne" apparently for Bishop Atterbury, etc. Paper; ff. 17. A.D. 1727-8. Bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps from Cochran, the bookseller (Cochran's catalogue, 1829, no. 133). Phillipps MS. 6428 (sale-cat. 1898, lot 265). 9 ½ X 7 ½ in.
