FORTY-NINE original letters from Charles Lamb to Bernard Barton, the Quaker poet; 11 Sept. 1822-21 Apr. 1831. Hologr., except f. 37, which is a copy by Barton, the original verses "For Lucy Barton's Album" having been taken for insertion there. They include all but two of Lamb's letters to Barton printed in The Letters of Charles Lamb, ed. Ainger, 1888, vol. ii. pp. 43-269 (the two exceptions at pp. 104, 106), and also (f. 57) a note concerning Mitford's china (cf. Ainger, ii. pp. 116, 155), which has not been printed. The dates are in most cases only supplied by the post-marks; Canon Ainger has mistaken three of these, viz. 5 Mar. for 5 Apr. 1823; 3 July for 3 June, 1829; and 30 Apr. for 21 Apr. 1831 (ff. 13. 82, 94, Ainger, ii. pp. 68, 227, 269). At the end is a list, made by Mrs. Edward FitzGerald [Miss Lucy Barton]. Paper; ff. 97. Quarto. Presented by the Rev. Bernard Barton and Mrs. A. FitzPatrick, residuary legatees of Mrs. Edward FitzGerald.
