George Waymouth, The Jewell of Artes
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 1r–320r: George Waymouth (or Weymouth), The Jewell of Artes. Two versions of this manuscript were presented to King James VI and I in 1604 and were incorporated into the royal library. This is the later version, produced after a peace with Spain was signed on 19/29 August.
This copy is in its original gold-tooled binding: the front and back covers have a semée (design in which small tool forms are stamped at regular intervals) of lions passant guardant, decorative cornerpieces and James's arms.
In seven books Waymouth describes the ancient instruments of navigation; the manner of building ships by geometrical proportion; the making of engines; instruments for surveying and taking observations; fortifications and mining; various kinds of ordnance and carriages; and instruments for gunners.
There are numerous pen-and-ink drawings (some of which are in colour, e.g. f. 60r), and volvelles (paper constructions with rotating parts, as on f. 312r).
