This manuscript contains a list of rents owed to, and pensions paid by, St Mary Magdalene’s Abbey, Cologne, a house of sisters of the Penitential Order of Mary Magdalene, a religious order established for former sex-workers. The manuscript is composed of two parts (ff. 1-10 and ff. 11-18) that were bound together after they were purchased by the British Museum in the mid-19th century.
A census of lands granted and leased to the same monastery is Add MS 21072.
Contents:
ff. 1r-18v: A list of rents owed to, and pensions paid by, St Mary Magdalene's Abbey, Cologne, in two parts (ff. 1-10 and 11-18), with extensive marginalia added in late 13th-century, early 14th-century, and 19th-century hands; written in Latin and German.
The manuscript contains a number of added texts, including:
f. 9v: an inserted copy of a bond between Prioress Irene and the abbey and John of Putzhaven, citizen of Cologne, setting terms for the repaying of a debt, dated 1325.
f. 18r: a memorandum of a grant by Prioress Hadwisse to Henry of Magdeburg.
ff. 8v, 9r, 10v and 17v are blank.

Large initials in red and blue ink. Paraph marks in alternating blue and red ink.

Foliation: ff. 18 (+ 7 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning and 5 at the end); f. 18 is a parchment fragment mounted on a paper leaf.
Script: Gothic cursive.
Binding: Post-1600. Brown leather, blind-tooled; marbled endpapers (for a comparable binding, see Add MS 21072).

Provenance:
St Mary Magdalene’s Abbey, Cologne, late 13th century: a list of the rents owed and pensions paid to the monastery, with additions and marginalia throughout the volume in later hands.
The manuscript was purchased by the British Museum in two parts: the first part (ff. 1-10) from C. Hamilton, 16 October 1855; the second part (ff. 11-18) was purchased through Messrs Boone, London booksellers, at Puttick's, 22 January 1857, for 11s, after which point the two parts were bound together.
