HISTORIA Hierosolymitana abbreviata: the historical and topographical work of Jacques de Vitry (Bishop of Acre 1216, Cardinal 1228, d. 1244). In two books and a prologue, lacking the doubtful third book. The prologue, headed "Incipit prologus magistri Iacobi Acconensis episcopi in hysloria Iheroiosolimitana," begins "Postquam diuine propitiationie munificentia," and is followed by a list of chapters (100) of Bk. I. Bk. I, headed "Incipit hystoria Iherosolimitana abbreuiata a magisntro Iacobo Acconensi episcopo," begins "Terra sancta promissionis deo amabilis." Bk. II is headed (f. 51) "Incipit liber secundus in cuius parte prima occidentalium historia breuiter enarratur," but treats exclusively of Western affairs, giving accounts of the religious orders, etc. The two books were printed, without the prologue, in the Douai edition of 1597, ed. F. Moschus. The prologue was first printed by Canisius, Lectiones Antiquae, vi, p. 1321 (ed. Basnage, iv, p. 27). Bongars, Gesta Dei per Francos, i, p. 1047, prints the prologue from Canisius, Bk. I and the doubtful Bk. III. Vellum; ff. ii + 88. 1 ft. 1 1/2 in. x 9 in. xiii cent. Gatherings of 8, mostly numbered at end.
