"THE CHOEPHORAE of Aeschylus translated from the Greek, 1796," and dedicated "to Mr. James Thomson London ... by his affectionate fellow student Thomas Campbell, Glasgow, July 10th, 1796." Autograph. This is the translation for selections from which Campbell won a prize at the University of Glasgow in 1795. A speech of the chorus, "written 1794," at the age of 16, is printed in W. Beattie, Life of Campbell, i, p. 121, from a MS. belonging to "a lady, to whom it was shortly after presented by Campbell, in the Island of Mull." The present MS. is, no doubt, the completed and revised form which he had written out and forwarded to his friend Thomson in London "with some faint hope of having it published" in 1796 (op. cit., i, p. 165). Paper ; ff. 56. 8.1/4 in. x 5.1/8 in. A.D. 1796. Binding of tree-calf.
