"YSTORIA Karoli gloriosissimi regis et Turpini archiepiscopi Remensis" (so colophon): the French version of the chronicle of the pseudo-Turpin, originally made in 1206 for Renaud, Count of Boulogne (see Ward, Cat. of Romances. i, p. 583). Printed, in the form associated with Michel de Harnes (cf. Ward, l.c., p. 584), by A. Demarquette in Mém. de la Soc. Impériale d'Agriculture, etc., du Dépt. du Nord, Ser. II, vol. iii (Douai, 1856), p. 171. The present text is in general agreement with Royal MS. 4 C. xi. Prologue beg. "Uoirs est que li plusors vnt oi uolenters et oient vncore de Charlemaigne," text "Uoirs est que li glorius apostres." At the end (f. 14 b) is the "Gene[a]logia regum Francorum as in 4 C. xi, beg. Li premers rois qui unques fu en France." After the last words, "Philippe li rois engendra Loys," there is added in another ink "Loys engendra." Vellum; ff. ii + 14. 9 in. x 6 in. Middle of xiii cent., in the same hand as Add. MSS. 38662, 38663. Two gatherings of 8 and 6 leaves (cf. note on f. 14 : "Deden3 le volum de tut (?) cele romaunce si sunt contenu3 si viii3 foyles escri [3]"). 40 lines to a page. See. fol. "-tinoble et." Large ornamental initial in red, white, blue, green and buff at the beginning, flourished initials in blue and red, or red and green, throughout. Binding of brown morocco by Bedford. Belonged to Sir Henry Hope Edwardes, Bart. (bookplate of arms; Christie's sale-cat., 20-23 May 1901, lot 99), and Francis William Bourdillon (bookplate, f. ii). A pencilled number on f. 1 indicates that the MS. was formerly the fifth article in a volume of which the following other articles are known to exist :-(3) Gui de Warwick, now Add. MS. 38662 ;-(4) Chancun de Willame, now Add. MS. 38663 ;-(6) Vie de. Sainte Marguerite; Adgar, Miracles de Nostre Dame, now Add., MS. 38664 ;-(7) Vie de Sainte Catherine, now Add. MS. 40143.
