BREVIARY, of Roman use, written in 1425 (see below). Contents:- (1) Temporale, with title "Incipit ordo breviarii secundum consuctudinem curie Romane." Leaves are missing after ff. 9, 64, 93. f. 1 ;- (2) Tables for finding Easter by the golden number, and for finding the dominical letter, the former headed by a note of the golden number for 1450, in an almost contemporary hand. f. 136 b ;-(3) Calendar containing saints from the districts of Turin and Milan, viz. :-Fusca (13 Feb.), Constantia (18 Feb.), Herculanus (1 Mar.), Habundius (2 Apr.), Gaudentius (3 Aug.), Zacharia (6 Sept.), Prosdocimus (7 Nov.), Zeno (8 Dec.), Syrus (9 Dec.). There are also some additions in a slightly later hand, which include the Venetian feasts :-Translation of St. Mark (31 Jan.), Apparition of St. Mark (25 June), Dedication of the church of St. Mark (8 Oct.), and two Franciscan anniversaries, "Offitium pro defunctis fratribus fiat secunda feria post dominicam Septuagesime" and "vltimo die feriali in ebdomada infra aduentum flat officium pro defunctis; patribus et matribus fratrum," have been added at a later date (16th cent.). f. 137;-(4) Psalter and hymns. A leaf is missing after f. 205. f. 143;-(5) "Incipit officium ad faciendum aquam benedictam." f . 212 b;-(6) "Ad tondendi (sic) infantem et benedicere capilos (sic)." f. 213 b;-(7) "In sancto Blaxio benedictio uini.' f. 213 b;-(8)" In sancto Sebastiano benedictio panis in modum auium. f. 213 b ;-(9) Sanctorale, with title "Incipiunt festiuitates sanctorum per totum annum." Leaves are missing after ff. 214, 221, 242. f. 214;-(10) Commune Sanctorum. Leaves are missing after f. 295. f . 289 b;-(11) Offices for (a) Trinity Sunday, f . 298, (b) Corpus Christi, with octave, f. 299 b, (c) St. Mary ad Nives (5 Aug.), f. 305, (d) Conception of B. V. M. (8 Dec.), f. 306 b, (c) fragment of an office, in a later hand, consisting of the 8th (imperf.) and 9th lessons from a homily on Luke i. 44-45, f. 309;-(12) Note in a contemporary hand on the institution of the feast of St. Martial (30 June) by Clement VI in 1352. f. 309;-(13) Fragment of a sermon on Luke xvi. 6, in a contemporary hand, beg. "Surrexit non est hie." f. 309 b. Vellum (except ff. i-iii) ; ff. iii + 310. Dated in the colophon at the end of the Temporale (f. 136) A.D. 1425: "Presbiteri Dondini de Becharis de Gropello [Gropello Cairoli, a village betw. Monara and Pavia] est istud breuiarium et per eundem in Siluani [probably Silvano Pietra, a village betw. Pavia and Voghera] Seriptum. ceptum de messe februari et finitum de messe octubris de dicto anno id est anno domini eurente 1425. et est secundus." Gatherings of 8 leaves (xix^4, xx^6 ; xiv, xxxi, xxxvii, xliv want one, ii, xxviii, xxxv, xliii want two, ix, xlii want four, xiii wants five, xxx, xxxii want seven, whole gatherings are missing after xxxi, xlii, xliv), with catchwords. Initials in red and blue. Contemporary binding of bevelled wooden boards covered with dark brown stamped leather, with the remains of brass clasps and fasteners. On f. i there is a bookseller's label of Pietro and Giuseppe Vallardi of Milan [17th cent.]. Presented by John Wickham Legg, Esq., F.R.C.P.
