"BREUIARIUM fratrum heremitarum ordinis sancti Augustini secundum consuetudinem curie Roniane." The MS. is not in full agreement with another Breviary (Add. MSS. 16890,91), also written in Italy, for the use of Augustinian Friars Hermita, and contains several observances which are not found in those MSS. Contents:-
(1) Calendar. In addition to the feasts of the Augustinian Friars, viz. William (13 Feb.), Transl. of Augustine (28 Feb.) in red, Monica (4 May), Conversion of Augustine (5 May) in red, Augustine (28 Aug.) in red, Nicholas of Tolentino (10 Sept.), the calendar contains several Northern Italian feasts, e.g. Margaret "secundum aliquos" (5 Jul. Ambr.). f. 1;-(2) Temporale. f. 7;-(3) "Incipit psalterium secundum formam Romane curie." f. 123;-(4) Canticles, hymns, etc., viz.:-(a) Canticles. f. 179 ;-(b) Hymns. f. 179 b;(c) Litany. f. 184;-(d) Opening words of the common hymns, little chapters (these are often written in full), antiphons, versicles, etc., for the Sunday and ferial canonical hours throughout the year. f. 185 b;-
(5) "Incipiunt fastivitates sanctorum per anni circulum." On f. 293 b has been added the office for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (14 Sept.), as in Brev. Romanum (Paris, 1519). f. 190;-(6) Commune Sanctorum. On f. 319 the "benedictiones offitii," to be used before each nocturn at Matins, have been placed before the "benedictiones mense temporum specialium totius anni." f. 296;-
(7) Miscellaneous offices and lessons, viz. :-(a) "Officium Transfigurationis domini nostri Yhesu Christi per sanctissimum papam nostrum Calistum" (introduced into Roman use by Calixtus III in 1457; cf. Coquelines, Bullarum Roman. Pontificum Collectio, iii, 3, col. 84). This feast also occurs in the calendar (7 Aug.) in red. f. 324;-(b) Lessons in the Octave of Epiphany, f. 327 b, the Octave of Ascension, f. 331 b, for Corpus Christi and its octave, f. 337 b, Conversion of St. Augustine (5 May), f. 356 b, Octave of the Assumption of the B. V. M., f. 357 b, Octave of St. Augustine (28 Aug.) with the title "Incipit dicta sanctorum doctorum in laudibus beatissimi patris nostri Augustini," f. 359 b, Octave of the Nativity of the B. V. M., f. 365;-(c) Offices for Paul the first hermit (10 Jan.), f. 348 b, Transl. of Augustine (28 Feb.), f. 352, Monica (4 May), f. 353 b, Nicholas of Tolentino (10 Sept.), with octave, f. 367 b;-
(8) "Ordo recommendationis anime." f. 373;-(9) Prefaces, f. 376, Canon of the Mass, f. 377, Votive Masses, f. 379 b, and Masses for SS. Augustine, f. 385 b, Nicholas of Tolentino, f. 385 b, Monica, f. 386, all in agreement with the Roman Missal of 1474;-(10) "Sequentia mortuorum." f. 386. Vellum (except ff i, iv, v, vi) ; ff. vi + 387. 5.1/2 in. x 3.7/8 in. Written in Italy, xv cent. Gatherings of 10 leaves (i^4, ii^2, xiii^8, xivb, xvill, xxi^6, xxvii-xxxvi^8, xxxvii^4, xlii1^2, xliii^8, xliv^4), mainly with catchwords. On f. 1 the following inscription has been added in a 15th cent. hand: "Sancte Marie Coronate Mediolani ad vsum fratris Victoris de Mediolano frater Paulus de Pergamo vicarius generalis [Paolo Olmi of Bergamo, 1414-1484, Vicar General of Lombardy 1462-1483; see Domenico Gandolfo, Dissertatio Historica de ducentis celeberrimis Augustinianis Scriptoribus, p. 285] manu propria r[e]l[iqui]t." Three historiated, and numerous illuminated, initials with partial borders (except f. 7, which has a full border) of coarse execution occur throughout. The subjects of the historiated initials are:-St. Paul (f. 7), God the Father (f. 123), a martyr (f. 190). Other initials in red and blue. Modern tooled morocco binding by Rivière and Son. On f. iv is a description of the MS., copied from the Libri sale-cat. of 29 Mar. 1859, when the MS. was acquired (lot 191) by Sir William Tite, the architect (sale-cat., 19 May 1874, lot 394). Subsequently belonged to Robert Buchanan Stewart of Glasgow (bookplate, f. 1; Sotheby's sale-cat., 19 Apr. 1888, lot 91), and Rev. E. S. Dewick, whose notes occur on ff. iv-vi and signature on f .
