BREVIARY of Olivetan use. Apart from the differences due to the greater length of the lessons in this MS., the text is in substantial agreement with that of Breviarivm congregationis Olivetanae, Venice, 1560, except in the Sanctorale, where divergences are frequent. An Olivetan breviary in two volumes at Rome (Vatican. 7235,7236), described by Ehrensberger, Libri Litvrgici Bibl. Vaticanae, pp. 265, 266, probably differs little from the present version. Contents :-(1) Calendar, in gold (reserved for feasts of the Virgin), red and black, wanting the first two leaves (Jan.-April). Red entries include SS. Donatus (7 Aug.), Pontianus (25 Aug.), Placidus (5 Oct.), Minias (25 Oct.). Some of the additional entries are obscure, e.g. Damasianus, mar. (23 May), Teodoricus, mar. (16 Nov.). The differences from the calendar in H. Grotefend's Zeitrechnung des deutschen Mittelalters, ii, pt. ii, pp. 8-11, are not serious. f. 1;-
(2) Tables, etc., viz. :-(a) Antiphons for Advent (as in Brev. congr. Olivetanae, 1560). f. 7;-(b) Rubric containing general directions for the year. Imperf. (three leaves wanting). f. 9 b;-(c) Movable feasts. f. 10 b. Mnemonic verses for finding the first day of the month by the Sunday letters have been added on f. 10 in a 17th cent. hand;-(3) Temporale, Advent-twenty-fourth Sund. after Pentecost, wanting two leaves at the beginning and single leaves after ff. 36, 163. The service for Trinity Sunday (f. 194 b) is substantially the rhythmical office (breves, Analecta Hymnica, v, pp. 19-22) composed by John Peckham, Archbishop of Canterbury, and made universal in 1343 (cf. the rubric in Breuiarium Romanum, Paris, T. Kerver, 1519, fol. cj) ; but the lessons are not from Peckham's homily on the doctrine of the Trinity. As in Vatican. 7235, the constitution "Excellentissimum" (Magnum Bullarium Romanum, Aug. Taurinorum, v, 1860, p. 14) of Eugenius IV, dated 26 May 1433, provides the first eight lessons for Sund. within the Octave of Corpus Christi (f. 202 b). f. 11;-(4) "Ordo psalterii secundum ritum monachorum sancte Marie montis Oliue[ti] ordinis sancti Benedicti": Psalter, with hymns, antiphons, etc. f. 261;-(5) Litany. The following invocations are in red :-SS. Benedict, Maurus, Bernard [of Clairvaux], Catharine and Scholastica. St. Zeno [of Verona ?], whose name is at the end of the very short list of bishops and confessors, finds no place in the printed edition of 1560 (for a similar omission of this saint, cf. Add. MS. 39633). f. 341;-(6) "In festiuitatibus sanctorum [incip]iunt cantica ter[tii nocturni]." f. 343 b;-(7) Hymnary, including (f. 351 b) hymns "in festo sancti patris nostri Benedicti" (Chevalier, Repert. Hymnol., nos. 3007, 18984, 1664). f. 344 b;-(8) Sanctorale, SS. Saturninus -Catharine. At the end is the inscription : "Explicit proprium sanctorum per me fratrem Stephanum de Bapharie, etc." f. 357;-
(9)"In aniuersario (sic) dedicationis eccelesie." f.523b;-(10)Commune sanctorum. f. 528;-(11) "[Ord]o officii beate Marie [virg]inis." f . 555 b; - (1 2) Communion and unction of the sick, ff. 560 b, 561 b, and commendation and burial-service. f. 563 b;-(13) "Offitium culpa in articulo mortis fienda." f. 575;-(15) "Passio domini nostri Y[es]u Christi secundum Johannem" (Joh. xviii-xix. 37). Imperf. at end. f. 576. Vellum ; ff. i + 577. 7 in. x 4.7/8 in. xv cent. (after A.D. 1433). Gatherings of 10 leaves (ill, lviii^8, last^3 ; i has 1 cancelled, wants 2, 3, 11-13 ; ii wants 1, 2 ; iv wants 9 ; xvii wants 7), with catchwords. Decorative initials in Italian style in colours on burnished gold grounds (many have been excised or mutilated,). Vellum binding (Italian, 18th cent.), gilt-tooled. Presented by John Wickham Legg, Esq., F.R.C.P.
