BREVIARY of the Vallombrosan abbey of San Salvi, Florence (for another breviary from this house see Egerton MS. 2973; a third Vallombrosan breviary is Burney MS. 333). There are considerable variations of arrangement and other differences from the text in Breuiarift sm. ordinem Vallis-Umbrose (Venice, 1493). Contents:-
(1) Calendar in red and black. The Deposition (12 July), Canonization (1 Oct.) and Translation (10 Oct.) of St. John Gualbert and the Feast of St. Salvius (10 Sept.) are in red, each (except "Canonizatio Sancti Johannis Gualberti") with its octave in black. "Dedicatio ecclesie Sancti Saluii" (24 Sept.), although in black, ranks as "duplex maius," and "Conmemoratio defunctorum Sancti Saluii" (4 Aug.), also in black, as "duplex minus." Among the twelve-lesson feasts, in black, are :-(a) SS. Bernard Bp. [of Parma ; abbot of San Salvi] (4 Dec.) and Romuald [founder of the Camaldolese Order] (20 for 19 June);-(b) SS. Alexander (6 June), Romulus (6 July) and Gaudentius (26 Nov.) of Fiesole;-(c) SS. Zenobius (25 May), Reparata (8 Oct.) and Minias (25 Oct.), venerated at Florence. f. 1;-(2) Psalter (with hymns, antiphons, etc.), Canticles and Creeds. f. 7;-(3) Litany, with double invocations of SS. The Florentine saints noted in the Calendar are also invoked. f. 67 b ;-(4) "Ad completorium cotidianum collatio breuis." f. 69;-(5) Office of the Virgin, followed (f. 72) by a series of Memoriae differing considerably from those in Breu. sm. ord. Vallis-Umbrose, ff. ccclxxxvii[i] b, cccxci b. f. 70;-(6) Office of the Dead. f. 73 b;-(7) "Officium dicendum per totum annum secundum ordinem Uallis Umbrose": Temporale, Advent-twenty-fourth Sund. after Pentecost. The lessons for Sund. within the Octave of Corpus Christi and for the Octave itself (ff. 246-247) are from the constitution "Excellentissimum" of Eugenius IV, dated 26 May 1433 (cf. Add. MS. 40149, art. 3). f. 77;-(8) -Tables of special antiphons before Christmas. Described as "secundum curiam Romanam," the tables are in general agreement with those in Breuiarium Romanum (ed. T. Kerver, Paris, 1519), f. viii, and differ widely from the lists prefixed to the Vallombrosan edition of 1493. f . 289;-(9) Sanctorale, SS. Andrew -Saturninus. The lessons for the Visitation of the Virgin on 2 July (f. 366) are from the Bull of Boniface IX, dated 9 Nov. 1389 (Magnum Bullarium Romanum, Aug. Taurinorum, iv, 1859, p. 602). f. 292;-
(10) Commune sanctorum. f. 444;-(11) Dedications of church and altar. ff. 461 b, 464 b;-(l2) Miscellancous lessons and collects for feasts of the Sanctorale. f. 466 b-(13) "Offictium (sic) paruulorum": office for the burial of infants.
