BREVIARY, pars hiemalis, of Augsburg use. The lessons in this MS. are frequently longer than those in the breviary printed by Erhard Ratdolt, Augsburg, 1495, and occasionally differ from them completely ; the other divergences in the Temporale and Sanctorale are not serious. Contents (1) Calendar, in red and black, with "Cisiojanus" (the differences from the text in H. Grotefend's Zeitrechnung des deutschen Mittelalters, i, p. 24, are largely accounted for by the introduction of Augsburg festivals), etc. On 28 Sept., in red, is "Dedicacio ecclesie Aug[ustensis]." Amongst the other red entries are:-
SS. Udalric Bp. [of Augsburg] (4 July, with octave in black), Septem fratres (10 July), Afra (7 Aug.), Magnus abb. [of Füssen] (6 Sept.), Gallus conf. (16 Oct.), Narcissuc ep. et m. [Bp. of Gerona, apostle of Augsburg] (29 Oct.), Othmar abb. [of St. Gall] (16 Nov.), Elizabeth vidua [of Hungary] (19 Nov.). There are no important variations from the calendar compiled by Grotefend, op. cit., ii, pt. i, pp. 4-7. f. 3;-(2) Astronomical tables for use in conjunction with the calendar. f.9;-(3)Directions for Christmas (cf.ff.397 b-401 of the breviary of 1495) and other ordinal matter. f. 12;-(4) Temporale, Advent-vigil of Pentecost, wanting the first leaf. The following E 2 rubric on f. 79 b may indicate that the MS. was written in A.D. 1443: "Nota ille ymnus A solis non habetur in choro quia breuiarium nichil narrat de eo nisi in sabbatum vel dominicam venerit. Anno etc. 1442[3] habebatur sic in choro." The vigil of the Epiphany, to which the rubric refers, fell on Saturday in 1443 and on Sunday in 1444. f. 19; -(5) Sanctorale, SS. Saturninus-Erasmus, ending (f. 305 b) with an office for the dedication of a church at Easter. An alternative service for St. Barbara (f. 225 b), subscribed "hec omnia secundum chorum Augustensem," is not found in the edition of 1495; but the MS. and printed text agree in appending a complete office for St. Odilia, who is commemorated (13 Dec.) only by a collect in the body of the Sanctorale in each case. A collect for St. Judoc, also on 13 Dec. (f. 236 b), "de quo chorus penitus nichil habet," does not occur in the printed version. f. 219 b;-(6) Commune sanctorum. f. 312. Paper; ff. ii + 357. 12 in. x 8.3/8 in. Double columns. A. D. 1443? (see art. 4 above). Initials, headings, etc., in red. Numbered gatherings of 12 leaves (ii wants 1, 2 last wants 11, 12 ; ff. 16, 17 are detached leaves). See. fol. of text "in suffragia." Contemporary foliation in red, ii-cclxxvii (ff. 19-309), and a-qq (ff. 312-357). Bound in wooden boards covered with white leather, blind-stamped, 15th cent.; back with three bands. Although the binding appears to be contemporary, the MS. had undergone repairs before becoming associated with it. Belonged, 19th cent., to William Francis de Vismes Kane, of Drumreaske, co. Monaghan (on ff. 1, 2, 11, 18, 311, 319, 320, 331, 338, 348, 351 are notes in his hand). Presented by John Wickham Legg, Esq., F.R.C.P.
