BREVIARY of Augustinian use, as would appear from the rubric "In uigilia patris nostri sancti Augustini episcopi" for the feast of St. Augustine (28 Aug.) on f. 100 b, and also from the direction "Et nichil fit de sancto Augustino nee de pace" which is found between Vespers and Matins for the Conversion of St. Paul (f. 15 b). This instruction may have cancelled a monthly commemoration of St. Augustine formerly observed on the vigil of the Conversion of St. Paul; for in the calendar of Add. MS. 16890 (a breviary of Augustinian Friars, written A.D. 1469) is the following entry for 24 Jan.: "Commemoracio sancti patris nostri Augustini quod fit semel in mense si non cadit festum eius." But the Sanctorale of the same breviary (Add. MS. 16891, f. 104 b ; cf. also Harley MS. 2872, f. 350) merely forbids any other commemoration than that of St. Peter. There are no offices in the Sanctorale of the present MS. for the distinctive Augustinian feasts (except the deposition of St. Augustine) ; but the feasts are similarly omitted from Harley MSS. 2872, 2988, Augustinian breviaries written respectively in Italy and Germany, and in Add. MS. 40148 they have been added at the end by a different hand. Contents:-(1) Sanctorale, SS. Andrew- Catharine, wanting the first leaf and a single leaf after f. 28. The first six lessons for the Visitation of the Virgin on 2 July (ff. 66 b- 67 b) are from the decree of Boniface IX, dated 9 Nov. 1389 (Magnum Bullarium Romanum, Aug. Taurinorum, iv, p. 602). f. 1;-
(2) Commune sanctorum. f . 141 b;-(3) "Historia de dedicacione ecclesie." f. 165 ;-(4) Office of the Virgin (Roman use). f. 168 b; -(5) "Officium in agenda mortuorum ... secundum consuetudinem Romane curie." At the end is the colophon: "Et est finis breuiarium (sic) Per me fratrem Johannem de Argentina, 1472." f. 174 b. Vellum; ff. i + 178. 5.3/8 in. x 4 in. Double columns. A.D. 1472. Written in Germany (possibly at the Augustinian convent at Strasburg). Gatherings of 10 leaves (i wants 1, iii wants 10), with catchwords. An illuminated initial in German style at the beginning of the Commune sanctorum. Presented by John Wickham Legg, Esq., F.R.C.P.
