DIURNAL of the use of the Canons Regular of the Windesheim Congregation;. from the Priory of Our Lady and the Holy Apostle's at Utrecht (see below). The text throughout is in, close agreement with that in Diurnale sec. ord. regularlum caprtuli Windechimensis, Basel, 1499, and has much in common with Add. MSS. 11864, 11863, a breviary in two volumes from the monastery of Roode-Clooster, near Brussels, which was united to the Windesheim Congregation in 1412 (see Le Grand Theatre Sacrd de Brabant, i, p. 327). Contents:-
(1) Tables for use in conjunction with the calendar, viz.:-(a) Golden Numbers, A.D. 1431-1449;-(b) Dominical Letters, A.D. 1401-1428; -(c) Table for finding the number of weeks between Christmas and Quinquagesima Sunday from the Golden Number and Dominical Letter. f. 3;-(2) Calendar. Apart from the absence of St. Anne (26 July), the Presentation of the Virgin (21 Nov.) and the dedication of the church of Windesheim (Sund. after 16 Oct.), the text is in almost complete verbal agreement with the calendar preceding the printed diurnal. All the Utrecht saints noted by Grotefend, Zeitrechnung des deutschen Mittelalters , vol. ii, pt. ii, p. 4, and others (e.g. Willibrord, 7 Nov.) appear. f. 6;-(3) Abridged ordinary, as in the printed diumal. The "ordinarius abbreuiatus" in Add.MSS.11864, ff. 25 b-32, 11863, ff. 15-17 is fuller, and contains references to the practices of the church of Cambrai on the festivals after Pentecost. f. 19;-(4) Psalms for Sunday Lauds, offices for SS. Monica and Anne (neither of whom appears in the Sanctorale), psalms at Compline. f. 28;-(5) Psalter (with hymns, antiphons, etc.), as in the printed diurnal. f. 36;-(6) "vij psalmi penitenciales" and Litany. St. Augustine heads the list of the confessors in the Litany, and the names of SS. Anne and Monica have been inserted. No differences from the printed diurnal. ff. 86, 91;-(7) Office of the Dead. f. 96 -(8) Hymnal, differing from the printed diurnal by the insertion of the hymns at Matins. Add.MSS.11864,ff.142-147,11863,ff.124b- 131, provide hymns for a few additional feasts. Imperf. at end (a gathering is wanting). f. 109;-(9) Temporale, Advent-twenty third Sund. after Trinity. Pars hiemalis (ff. 125-207 b) is in general agreement with Add. MS. 11864, ff. 156-199; Pars aestivalis (ff. 208- 270) corresponds to Add. MS. 11863, ff. 140-168, but with considerable divergences in the offices immediately after Pentecost. Apart from differeneces in the rubric "De vacacionibus per estatem" and the following table on ff. 234,235 (cf. also Add. MS. 11863, ff. 17, 18), the text conforms closely to the printed diurnal. f. 125;-
(10) Sanctorale, SS. Andrew-Saturninuk; and others. The text in the main corresponds to Add. MSS. 11864, ff. 200-212, and 11863, ff. 170 b-208 (Add. 11864, 11863 omit the Utrecht festivals, transl. of St. Lebuin, SS. Frederick, Werenfrid, Gregory and Radbod, introducing the Transfiguration and the Cambrai saints Autbert, Gudule and Gaugeric, etc.). The Sanctorale of the, printed diurnal differs from this MS. by the inclusion of offices for SS. Anne and Monica (see art. 4) ; neither has an office for the Presentation of the Virgin, although a marginal note in the MS. (f. 346) calls attention to its absence. f. 271;-(11) "In dedicacione ecclesie." f. 349;-
(12) Commune sanctorum. An almost identical office in Add. 11864, ff. 213-222, has the colophon "Explicit diurnale de sanctis ab aduentu usque ad pascha." f. 351 b ;-(13) Commemorations of the Virgin throughout the year and other suffrages, as in the printed diurnal. There are no material differences from the texts in Add. MSS. 11864, ff. 150-155, 11863, ff. 135 b-139, except that those include the services at Matins for the commemorations of the Virgin. f. 368. Vellum; ff. iv + 373 (ff. 1, 2, 4 blank). 5.1/4 in. x 3.3/4 in. xv cent. (first half). Gatherings of 8 leaves (i^6, 2, 5 cancelled, a single leaf, f. 3, formerly pasted to the stump of 5 ; ii^8, f. 5 is a strengthening strip formerly pasted to f. 6 ; iv^6 ; viii has 7 cancelled ; xiv^10 ; xvii wanting; xxxvlo; xlviii^6; la last). Probably written at Utrecht. Initials in red and blue, some with penwork. Binding of oak boards covered with brown leather. Each cover is divided by diagonal three-line fillets into twenty-four compartments, twelve of lozenge shape, the remainder forming segments of lozenges. The lozenges contain four impressions of each of the following stamps: pelican in her piety (rectangular), swan with star (circular), quatrefoil (Iozengeahaped). These stamps are reproduced by A. Hulshof and M. J. Schretlen, De Kunst der oude Boekbinders, 1921, pl. iii, nos. 3, 10, 11, and appear on books bound by the Brothers of the Common Life (or of St. Jerome) at Utrecht. The segments of lozenges bear impressions of two stamps: a heart transfixed by two arrows in saltire, surmounted by a star (circular), and a fleur-de-lys (lozengeshaped). According to the South Kensington Catalogue of Bookbindings, 1894, pp. 168, 169, the two stamps occur commonly on books belonging to the Augustinian Priory at Utrecht; they are reproduced by Hulshof and Schretlen, op. cit., pl. i, nos. 4, 8. The evidence afforded by the occurrence of the various stamps on books at Utrecht suggests that the binding dates from the last quarter of the 15th century. Remains of brass clasps. Belonged to the Priory of Our Lady and the Holy Apostles at Utrecht; see the inscription, 16th cent., "Ad Regulares Ultraiectinos" on f. 372 b. Subsequently in the possession of John Hope, 5th Earl of Hopetoun (bookplate, f. i, cf. Add. MS. 33517), and Rev. E. S. Dewick (on ff. iii, iv are notes in his hand). Presented by John Wickham Legg, Esq., F.R.C.P.
