NOTEBOOKS of experiments and lectures by David Edward Hughes, F.R.S., electrician and inventor, 1878-1886. In the course of researches in telephony Hughes seems to have anticipated the discovery of the Hertzian waves (cf. the experiments of Nov. 1879-Feb. 1880, and the note dat. Nov. 1897 inserted at vol. I, f. 230 b, referring to the presence of Prof. Stokes and others at those early demonstrations). The lectures (1883-1886) were delivered before various scientific Societies and are printed in their Proceedings. For an earlier series of note-books see Add. MSS. 40641-40648. The dates of the present volumes are: Nov. 1878-Feb. 1880; Sept. 1880-Oct. 1884; May 1883-Jan. 1886. Some account of the contents is given by A. A. Campbell Swinton in the Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, vol. 1x (1922), pp. 492-494, and in Nature, 15 Apr. 1922. Paper; ff. 269, 285, 209. Small quarto and (40163) quarto. 1878-1886. Bequeathed by the writer's widow, Anna Chadbourne Hughes.
