of Pope Alexander VII in six books by Cardinal Sforza Pallavicino
- Scope & Content:
-
LIFE Italian. Two volumes. The MS. agrees in general with the printed text, but occasionally presents a different and fuller version. As compared with the Prato edition (1839, 1840) the following characteristics may be noted: Vol. I, bk. iii, ch. 11 beg. "Fu questa persona - descriuendo," f. 495; -ch. 17 (of the printed version) is omitted, probably by oversight; Vol. II, bk. iv, ch. 5 beg. "Haueua pochi - venutale," f. 38; bk. v, ch. 8, after "regimento," adds "et ultimamente - gelosi," f. 268 b; bk. vi, chh. 1, 2 are wrongly printed as bk. v, chh. 15, 16 (cf. bk. v, ch. 14, "con questa terminaremo il presente libro," f. 337) ; bk. vi, chh. 3, 4 are a repetition of bk. iii, chh. 3, 4, except for considerable differences in ch. 4, e.g. from "Per 3° partito" (f. 398 b) onwards. In addition, Vol. II closes (f. 402) with the secret protest of Alexander VII against the treaty of Pisa, entitled "Protesta fatta di nostro proprio pugno questo di 18: febraio 1664"; printed, with French translation, by P. C. F. Daunou, Essai historique sur la puissance temporelle des Papes, 1811, vol. ii, pp. 176-191. Cf. also C. de Moüy, L'Ambassade du Duc de Créqui, 1893, vol. ii, pp. 291-295, and C. Gérin, Louis XIV et le Saint-Siège, 1894, vol. i, pp. 469, 470. Paper (watermarks, anchor in circle with star above, or bird in circle, in each case flanked by initials A N); ff. ii + 592, ii + 407. Large quarto. xvii cent. Belonged to Cardinal Imperiali; cf. the note "ill[ustrissi]m[i] V[iri] Imperlalis C[amerae] A[postolicae] C[lerici?]" and the bookstamp "Ex Bibl[iotheca] Ios[ephi] Ren[ati] Card[inalis] Imperialis" at the beginning of each volume. (See, too, the Catalogue of the Imperiali Library, Rome, 1711, p. 365.) Bookplate of arms of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (sale-cat., 1830, part of lot 94) ; Thorpe's cat., 1833, no. 19; Phillipps MS. 7202 (sale-cat., 1899, lot 740). Presented by Prof. Laski.
