"STÈNO," a dramatic poem in Russian blank verse by Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, dated on the title-page 21 Sept.-13 Dec. 1834. Holograph. This, the earliest surviving work of the author, was composed at the age of sixteen under the influence of Byron's Manfred. First published by M. Gershenzon in Golos Minuvshago, No. 8, Aug. 1913, pp. 217-267, and again by the same editor in Russkie Propilei, Vol. iii, 1916, pp. 1-43. A few marginal criticisms in pencil are attributed by Gershenzon to P. A. Pletnev, one of Turgenev's professors. Paper; ff. ii + 19. 141 in. x 9 in. 1834. A note in Turgenev's later band on f. 1 b records the presentation of the MS. to A[vdotya] Ya[kovlevnal P[anaev]. The subsequent ownership, from A. V. Nikitenko to M. M. Lyuboshehinsky, is recounted in a Russian note bound up with the volume (f. 1).
