ANNALS of Ireland, 1162-1370, in Latin and the Irish-English version of Giraldus Cambrensis, De Expugnatione. Hiberniae.
1. Annals of Ireland, 1162-1370, abridged from "Pembridge's Annals" (for this title cf. Analecta Hibernica, Irish MSS. Commission ii, 1931, pp. 320, 321, where an account of these annals is given), which were first printed by Camden at the end of the 1607 edition of his Britannia, and, more accurately, by J. T. Gilbert, Chartularies of St. Mary's Abbey, Rolls Ser., 1884, ii, p. 303, in both cases from the Bodleian MS., Laud Mise. 528. The abridgement is probably that of Philip Flattisbury of Johnstown near Naas, who in 1517 made extracts from Pembridge's Annals for the 9th Earl of Kildare (cf. Campion, Historie of Ireland, ed. Sir J. Ware, 1633, p. 68, who used these extracts in three copies in the possession of Lord Trimleston, Arthur Agarde and Thomas Stanyhurst, and a copy in Trin. Coll. Dublin MS. 584). The present MS. was clearly prepared under Flattisbury's eye, for at the end of the Annals are certain extracts in his hand (for which see a facsimile of the Red Book of Kildare compiled by him for the 8th Earl in 1503, Gilbert. Nat. MSS. Ireland, iii, PI. ix, and entries in the same hand in the Kildare Rental, Harley MS. 3756, passim), viz.: -(a) Three paragraphs headed "Jus et titulum (sic) Corone Anglie," beg. "Henricus filius Edmundi": note on Lancastrian and Yorkist claims to the crown. f. 54 b;-(b) Obit of Richard de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, 1326, as printed among the de Burgh entries in J. Grace's Annales, Ir. Arch. Soc., 1842, p. 160. ib.;-(c) Various annalistic memoranda, 1394-1513, chiefly of Fitzgerald interest, not in strict chronological order, agreeing with the additions to Grace's Annals, op. cit,., p. 156; with some additions in a later hand. ib. The connection with Grace here is significant, for in Cotton MS. Vespasian D. x, ff. 138 b-143, are some fragments of annals for 948-1145, 1242-1257, also in Flattisbury's hand, which are obviously the Source for the corresponding annals in Grace. These are followed by other extracts in different 16th century hands, viz.:-(d) Obits of Mortimers, Lacies and Genevilles ; cf. Grace, p. 158. f. 55 b;-(e) Tale about the battle of Knocktow, A.D. 1513, not among those found in the Book of Howth, pp. 181 sqq. Engl. Printed in Anal. Hib., ii, p. 327. f. 56;-(f) A curious account of the murder of William de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster, 1333, for which see Clyn, Annals, Ir. Arch. Soc., p. 24, and Orpen, Ireland under the Normans, iv, p. 246. Engl. f. 56 b;-(g) Obit of Nicholas Comyn, bishop of Lisniore and Waterford, 12 July 1557. Lat. f. 57;-(h) Account of Lord Leonard Gray's proceedings, 1536, agreeing except for verbal differences with that in Grace's Annals, p. 158. Lat. f. 58 b. A quire of ten leaves has been inserted between ff. 43 and 54, the last two leaves of the original annals, on which a later 16th century hand has made a transcript of the last annal, 1370, followed after two blank leaves by annals for 1397-1433/4 (f. 47). These derive from Marleburgh's Chronicle, cf. Camden, Britannia, ed. 1607, p. 832. The Annals have been annotated by a number of later 16th century hands, among them that of Lord Burleigh, who has made entries from other Irish annals. On a flyleaf at the beginning (f. 1) are various lists in Engl. in hands later than that of the Annals, viz.: -(1) "Archiepiscopi et Episcopi Hibernie";-(2) "Quincque porciones et principes Hibernie";-(3) Calculation of the number of cantreds in the five provinces;-(4) Latin note on two of the Twelve Abuses;-(5) Lists of the sons of Shane O'Neill, -mac Faghtna O'Moore and Calvagh O'Conor. Transcribed from this MS. by Laurence Nowell in Cotton MS. Domitian xviii, f. 91. f. 1 b.
2. Giraldus Cambrensis, De Expugnatione Hiberniac, translated into Anglo-Irish. The version found in several MSS. (Trinity College Dublin MS. 575, the most archaic form, Bodleian MS., Rawlinson B. 420, Lambeth MSS. 598 and 623, f. 6). Printed (T. C. D. MS. 575 and the Rawlinson MS.) by Furnivall, The English Conquest of Ireland, E. E. T. S., 1896, who points out that the nearest form of the Latin text is that found in Harley MS. 177, and by Brewer and Bullen, Cal. of the Carew MSS., Book of Howth, etc., 1871, pp. 36 (Lambeth 623) and 261 (Lambeth 598). A specimen of the text of T. C. D. MS. 593 is given by Furnivall, op. cit., p. xiv. The present text, which has characteristic verbal differences from all the others, is preceded by a prologue on the right of the English crown to Ireland, beg. "Here folowyth. how many tymes. & of what personys Irlond was ynhabyt" (cf. the Book of Howth, p. 32). The work beg. "In the thyme that kyng Harry regned in Englonde," and ends (in chap. lix, E. E. T. S. ed., p. 140), "they wold kepe þo ryght of þer old fredomes othyr þei wold lese þer lywes." A later hand has added at the end (f. 102) a note on the stipends paid by the King of England to various Irish kings, beg. "Kyng Hanry the second gaw to Mak Morzche." f. 67. Vellum; ff. ii + 106. 8.1/4 in. x 6 in. xvi cent. (art. 1) and xv cent. (art. 2). Gatherings: in art. 1, i-ii^10, iii^8, iv^10, v^12 (lacking 2, 4,8,12), vi^10 (a later insertion between ff. 43 and 54), vii^8 (lacking 6), vii^6 (Jacking 1, 3, 5); in art. 2 all of 8 leaves; the gatherings are
lettered at the beginning (inaccurately) in a later hand. Binding as in 40671. The two parts were originally distinct. Art. 1 was compiled apparently under the supervision of Philip Flattisbury, probably in connection with his work for the 8th Earl of Kildare. Art. 2 appears to have been in the possession of the D'Arcy family of Platten, co. Westmeath, in the 15th-16th century period, cf. an obit on f. 105: "Obitus Johannis Darcii iunioris anno m°cccc°lxxxii° primo die Januarii," and on f. 106 a roughly-drawn shield of arms of the family, semée of cross crosslets and four (recte 3) cinquefoils (16th cent.). MS 45 at Wrest Park (H.M.C., p. 7; sale-cat., lot 583).
