PSALTER and HYMNARY, in Latin, originally two separate MSS., as follows :-
A. (1) The "Suscipere dignare" prayer before the Psalter, adapted for a woman ("ego indigna et peccatrix") and with other variants. Written in a hand of late 12th cent. type, but perhaps contemporary with the Psalter, on an inserted leaf. f. 1 b;-(2) Abbreviated Gallican Psalter (opening words of each verse only), followed (f. 28 b) by the first six of the usual Old Testament canticles similarly treated. f. 2;-(3) Athanasian Creed. f. 30 b;-(4) Office of the Dead. In place of the usual ninth lesson a brief exemplum in support of prayers for the dead, beg. "Vir for.," is substituted. f. 31.
B. (1) Hymnary. The second leaf (f. 35) repeats the text of the first which, when half-written, was abandoned but not cancelled. A few hymns have been added later at ff. 33 b (the last leaf of A), 62, 68 b. f. 34 ;-(2) Hours of St. John Baptist (f. 63) and of St. Mary Magdalene (f. 66), each with three lessons;-(3) "Incipit libellus ad santi (sic) spiritus inuocacionem," beg. "Veni Sanetc spiritus patris filiique": metrical Psalter of the Holy Spirit in 172 quatrains, each headed by a rubric of the opening words of a Psalm (Ps. cxviii being in 22 divisions and Ps. cxlix being repeated). Lacking the prefatory verses found in Royal MS. 2 A. ix, f. 1 (see Dreves, Analecta Hymnica, xxxv, p. 7). f. 69;-(4) Introductory verses to art. 5 in 12 quatrains, omitting the 5th found in Royal MS. 2 A. ix, f. 47. Beg. "Digni regis digna milicia." Printed by Dreves, xxxv, p. 11. f. 89 b;-(5) "Hie incipit psalterium de sancta [cruce]," beg. "Ave salutiferum sancte crucis lignum": metrical Psalter of the Holy Cross in 150 quatrains with rubrics as above. Printed by Dreves, p.12, from Royal MS.2A.ix. f. 90b;-(6) Prayer in French, partly metrical, beg. "Tres duz sire et tres duz ihû crist." f. 109. Vellum; ff. iv + 111. 4.1/2 in. x 31 in. xiii cent. (A early xiii cent.). Gatherings irregular. Various Latin jottings occur one, a three-line accompt, contains the name Scalcal (f. 110 b). On f . III are the lines "Qui librum furatur per collum pendere datur" and "Luxuriat raro non bene pasta caro." Belonged to the Austin Nuns of Campsey Priory, co. Suffolk ("Cest liure est a couent de. Campisse," f. 34; Press-mark "D.D. .141.," f. 35), and later to Aylot Holt (16th cent., f. 111), Charles Hurt, jun., Wirksworth, 15 Feb. 1819 (with canting bookplate) and W. Dyce, 1853. Lot 1329 at the Howell Wills sale (Sotheby's, 16 July 1894), and lot 459 at Sotheby's, 20 June 1922.
