1. Charles [V, Holy Roman Emperor] to his aunt [Margaret, Duchess of Savoy, Archduchess of Austria] as Regent [of the Netherlands]; Saragossa, 20 Apr. 1529. Fr. and cypher. Signed, and countersigned by [Cornelis van] Aerssen (cf. Add. MS. 26053, f. 1). Lot 15 in a French sale-cat., Thursd., 17 Mar. [cf. the cutting with art. 2], apparently in 1853 or 1859. f. 2.

2. J[acques] B[énigne Bossuet], É[vêque] de M[eaux], to Madaiiie [Henriette Thérèse] dalbert [called Soeur Henriette Angélique], daughter of Louis Charles d'Albert, Due de Luynes; Paris, -30 Aug. 1691. Fr.; with seal (imperf.). This letter, which supplements a collection of fifty-nine letters (a few fragmentary) in Add. MS. 24421, bears the letter ø in the hand of Dom Coniae who assisted D. Deforis in producing (Euvres de Messire Bossuiet, Paris, 1772-88, and is printed ibid., xii, p. 40, with a few minor differences. An account of Bossuet's letters to Mme. d'Albert, partly derived from Deforis, Op. cit., xii, pp. lj-lvj, is in vol. iv, pp. 448-452, of Bossuet's correspondence edited by C. Urbain and E. Levesque, iii 1911, for Regnier's Les Grands Écrivains de La France; cf. also ibid., p. 290. Lot 10 in the above sale-cat. f. 7.

About 1793 the recipient's son-in-law printed all extract in his autobiographical Précis de la vie du Citoyen Lambert, suivi de quelques lettres de Rousseau, p. 26, which was reprinted by V. D. Musset-Pathay, OEuvres inédites de Rousseau, i, p. 44. The complete text, with a few trifling, variations, is in T. Dufour's Correspondance Générale de Rousseau, iv (1925), p. 280. f. 15;-

(b) Madame [Renée Caroline (or Charlotte) de Froulay, Marquise de Créqui]; Paris, 9 Oct. 1751. Fr. Facsimile copy. The letter is printed at the beginning of the correspondence with the Marquise de Créqui by Dufour, op. cit., ii, p. 13 (cf. Musset-Pathay, Hist. de Rousseau, i, p. 321); but in English translations of Rousseau's letters (London, 1799, 1820) it is included amongst those addressed to Mme. d'Houdetot. Facsimiles of the letter, not all from the same plate, are in the English and German (Kðnigsberg, 1799) translations of Rousseau's letters; also in Sammlung historisch-berühmter Autographen, Stuttgart, 1846, pl. 116, and elsewhere. f. 17. Both (a) and (b) formerly belonged to Louis Philippe Joseph Girod de Vienney, Baron de Trémont (sale-cat., Paris, 21 Dec. 1852, lot 1280).
