1. Papers relating to the Cinque Ports and their members. They, with articles 3, 4 and 5, probably came into possession of their former owners, the Oxenden family, on the death of Sir Basil Dixwell, 2nd Bart. of Brome, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Governor of Dover Castle, who died without issue in 1750, his estate passing by will to his nephew, George Oxenden. As follows:-
(a) English translation, lacking the first leaf, of Edward VI's inspeximus and confirmation of the charters of the Cinque Ports, reciting previous confirmations, 20 Nov. 2 Edw. VI [1548]; written in 1553 by Thomas Hoker, town-clerk of Winehelsea (see colophon on f. 17 b). The Latin text is printed with a translation by S. Jeake, Charters of the Cinque Ports, Two Ancient Towns, and their Members, pp. 2-88. For another translation made in 1578, now in the Public Record Office, see Calendar of State Papers, Domestic, 1547-1580, p. 614. f. 1. (b) Letters of Edward IV, reciting the articles of the charters of the Cinque Ports, and enjoining respect for them; 23 Mar. 5 Edw. IV [1465]. Engl. transl.
