Add MS 40735

SURVEY of the copyhold tenures of the manor of Codicote, co. Hertf., arranged under names of tenants, an index to which, in an 18th cent. hand, is given at the end (f. 44 b). The work has no heading, and an early 18th cent. (? 1704, see Add. MS. 40734, f. i) note on the cover, viz., "Pars altera Extent. An° R.H. viij. xxxviij. viz. 1546" (later wrongly altered to 1542), perhaps suggests that it is, in its present form, imperfect, as no date is given in the manuscript itself. The manor was granted in 1545 by Henry VIII to John Penne, Groom of the Privy Chamber, who in the following year, the date of the survey, alienated two portions to Nicholas Bristowe and John Michell (Letters and Papers of Henry VIII, xx, pt. ii, p. 449; xxi, pt. i, p. 580; Vict. Count Hist., Hertfordshire, ii, pp. 346, 347). Many of the persons mentioned in the extent occur as witnesses to the latter transactions. Additions, marginal notes of measurements and changes of tenants, etc., have been made throughout in contemporary or slightly later hands. Paper; ff. ii + 44. Folio. A.D. 1546. Vellum cover.
