PONTIFICAL SERVICES, etc., for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday at Gerona in North Spain, in Latin, viz.:-(1) Order for the Reconciliation of the Penitents, similar in most respects to the order as described by Herbert Thurston, S.J., Lent and Holy Week, pp. 309-314, and to that printed in Pontificale Romanum, Venice, 1520, ff. 178-18l vo. f. 2;-(2) "Incipit ordo crismalis," viz.:-
(a) Mixing and blessing the balsam (normally placed later in the service; cf. Pontificale cit., f. 185). f. 8 b;-(b) Mass for Maundy Thursday (cf. Henry Bradshaw Society, Roman Missal, 1474, vol. i, pp. 156-158), with the blessing of the Chrism and the Oil of the Catechumens (cf. Thurston, op. cit., pp. 315-325, and Pontificale cit., ff. 184-189). On f. 33 b are directions for the distribution of the
chrism and the oil by the four archdeacons of the diocese of Gerona at four altars in the cathedral, viz.:-Gerona ("de Rogationibus"), altar of St, John; Empurias, St. Michael; La Selva, St. Anastasia; Besalú, St. Andrew. Between this and the Postcommunion are placed the regulations for Vespers of the day. f. 9 b;-(3) Articles 1 and 2 as performed by the Hebdomadarius when the bishop is not present. In the main the services are unchanged, except that the consecration and distribution of the chrism and oil are omitted. The antiphons and first words of the Psalms at Vespers are given; cf. Breuiarium Romanum, 1519, Temporale, f. lxxiii b. f. 35;-(4) Rubrics concerning the tolling of bells,. with compline, washing of the feet and reading the "testamentum," i.e. St. John. xiii-xiv. f. 51;-(5) " Feria vja. in parasceue,"- viz.:-(a) Service of the three lessons, f. 52 b;-(b) Solemn prayers. f. 55 b;-(c) Adoration of the Cross. f. 62;-(d) Mass of the Presanctified. f. 64 b;-(e) Antiphons and the opening words of the Psalms for Vespers. f. 67;-(f) Directions for washing the altar, with responds, versicles and prayers.. f. 67 b. The first four divisions of this article are very similar to the Good Friday services printed in the Roman Missal, i, pp. 161-174 ; for (e) cf. Breu. Romanum, f. lxxv (the antiphon over the Magnificat differs) ;-(6) " Feria iiij^a. celebratur sancta synodus in ecclesia Gerundensi. Et [si] festum sancti Luche uenerit in feria iiija. ipsa eadem die incipiat synodus celebrari." Only the opening rubrics and most of the Litany remain. The following saints of apparently local or Spanish significance occur:-Pontius [Bp. of Nice], Narcissus [Bp.; a church at Gerona was dedicated to him, cf. f. 68], Isidore [Bp. of Seville], Eulalia, Leocadia [of Toledo]. f. 68 b. Vellum ; ff. iv + 72. 101 in. x 7.5/8 in. Early xv cent. Imperfect at the end. Gatherings of 8 leaves, with catch-words except where there is music (last wants 8). Illuminated border with foliage in gold and colours on f. 2 (initial cut out). Initials in blue and red with penwork decoration in red and indigo; the larger initials-have also gold. Music on four-line stave. Rubrics occur in the margins throughout,. in a variety of 15th and 16th cent. hands.
