MANUAL, in Latin, of Sarum use (cf. ff. 13 b, 17); fragmentary. The MS. has been noticed and partly printed (see art. 8) by J. Wickham Legg in Tracts on the Mass (Henry Bradshaw Soc., 1904). Contents :-

MSS. 30506, ff. 39 b, 40, 32320, ff. 2 b, 3) by the omission of the constitution Concertacioni antique. finem imponere cupientes" of Pope John XXII respecting the blessing of second marriages. Imperf. at beginning. f. 1;-(2) "Orio ad seruicium peregrinorum faciendum." f. 2;-(3) Benedictions, viz. "ensis noui militis," f. 7; "carnis in die Pasche," ib. "carnis, casei, butiri, ouorum siue pastillarum in Pascha," f. 7 b; nouiorum fructuum," f. 8 ad omnia quecunque uolueris," ib.; seminis," ib. pomorum," ib. pomorum in die sancti Iacobi," f.8b; "panis in diebus dominicis," ib.;-(4) Commendation of a soul: the office said-before burial (cf. a somewhat different version in J. Collated in Legg's Tracts on the Mass (see pp. xxx, xxxi, 219-229, 255-268) with the ordinary of the "oldest [13th cent.] Sarum missal known to exist." f. 38;-(9) Votive and special masses, viz. of the Virgin, f. 44; "de Trinitate," f. 46 b; "noue solempnitatis," i.e. Corpus Christi (see Henry Bradshaw Soc., Missale Romanum, 1899, i, pp. 256-259), here intended as a votive mass of the Eucharist, f. 47; "pro fratribus et sororibus," f. 47 b; of the Holy Ghost, f. 48; the Holy Cross, f. 49; "pro fidelibus defunctis," the collect, secret and postcommunion being those used on the day of burial, f. 49 b; "Commemoracio omnium sanctorum," f. 51; "pro fratribus et sororibus defunctis," ib.; "pro anima (sic) aduersario (sc.anniuersario)," f.51b; "pro (sic) temptacione carnis," ib.; "pro patre et matre," ib.; "pro benefactoribus defu[n]ctis," f. 52; "pro quocunque defuncto," ib. "pro cunctis fidelibus defunctis," ib. Masses of or for the following have been added in the margins: the Angels (f. 46 b) departed bishops (f. 50 b), departed kindred and benefactors (f. 51 b) -(10) "Gloria in excelsis." f. 52;-(11) The Trental of St. Gregory, differing considerably from the version in Legg's Sarum Missal. p. 460, and with much additional matter. f. 52 b. Vellum; ff. iii + 56 (f. 40 mutilated). 111 in. x 7.5/8 in. Written in England, late xiv cent. (artt. 10, 11 and the marginal masses in art. 9 added later). Gatherings of 8 leaves (vi^10, last^2). Double columns of 30 lines, with flourished initials; music on four-line stave. The vellum flyleaves at the end are from English service-books of the 15th cent., viz.:-(a) Leaf from an antiphoner, containing parts of the offices for SS. Agnes (21 Jan.) and Vincent (22 Jan.); see Procter and Wordsworth, Breviarium ad usum Sarum, iii, coll. 96-100. ff. 53, 54;--(b) Fragments of two leaves from a liturgical psalter (see ibid., ii, coll. 103-105, 110-112). ff. 55, 56. Original binding of beech boards covered with brown leather; a vellum deed of the 18th cent. has been superimposed. Belonged to the Rev. William John Blew and Canon Edniund McClure.
