"EVOLUTIONS with the different Forms, Orders, &c., relative to the Direction of the Fleet in the Mediterranean under the Command of Admiral Sir John Jervis, K.B. [Earl St. Vincent 1797], by Robert Calder Esq^r First Captain [Kt. 1797, Bart. 1798], between the 2nd of October 1795, and the [20th of March 1798] copies of orders, memoranda, etc., dated from Jervis's flagship the "Victory" and, after 1 April 1797. the "Ville de Paris." Calder's commission as First Captain is at f. 2 b. Besides the ordinary instructions, and an index of contents at f. 81 b, the following are included:-
1. Tactical diagrams and instructions, several of which are reproduced from another source by Adm. Sir T. S. Jackson in his article, "The Letter Books of Sir Charles Thompson," in The Naval Miscellany (Navy Records Society), ii (1910), pp. 299-307. They are (a) "Cutting through the enemy's line from to leeward," op. cit., pl. i. f. 4 b;-(b) "Attacking the enemy from to windward," pl. ii. f. 7;-(c) "Four plans in case the enemy should bear up etc. in order to prevent the attack," pll. iv-vii. ff. 8 b-10;-(d) "Plan of forming the line of battle, orders of attack, retreat etc.", one undated at f. 10 b, another dated 19 Aug. 1796 at f. 21, the latter reproduced, op. cit., pl. iii;-(e) "Plan of gaining to windward in reforming the line on a shift of wind when sailing in line of battle." f. 23 b;-
(f) "Gaining to windward in reforming the line on a change of wind when sailing in line of battle." f. 24 b Form of mooring the weather squadron in S.
