Add MS 40766

POEMS, eulogistic and erotic. Irish. Written probably in the barony of Magherastephana, co. Fermanagh, at the end of the 17th century, apparently by a dependant of Màire Ni Raghallaigh (Mary O'Reilly), wife of Rudhraighe óg Mag Uidhir (Rory óg Maguire), called 5th Lord Enniskillen. Many poems relating to the O'Reillys and the Maguires are included. With later additions by Philip and Proinnsias O Caiside of co. Cavan, 1784-1785. Written, probably in the barony of Magherastephana, co. Fermanagh, by a dependant of Mary O'Reilly, wife of Rory Maguire, called 5th Baron Enniskillen (d. at St. Germains, 1708). The MS. was at Louvain in 1732, when Séamus 0 Muireadhaigh inserted art. 59 (he was a Dominican friar from Derry, who preached in Irish in Dublin in 1756; cf. De Burgo, Hibernia Dominicana, 1762. p. 197). A stanza on f. 120 b, beg. "A uadh na mogall don chrobhuing dob aoirde craobh," is in his hand. Later the MS. belonged to the Dominican house of Gaula in the barony of Magherastephana (cf. f. i: "Hic liber jure quasi hereditario spectat ad filios Conventus Gaulensis"), and in the late 18th cent. to members of the Ó Caiside family. Pilip Ó Caiside wrote art. 61 in 1784, and Proinnsias Ó Caiside owned the book in 1785 (see his name impressed with a stamp on f. 4, etc.), and added arts. 2, 3, 54, 55 (?), 57, 58, 60, 62-66, 68-71. His son Francis owned it in 1810 (see an interesting note on f. 7 b), and Henry Mac Manus of Ballyjamesduff, co. Cavan, bought it from Mr. [Francis?] Cassidy in 1838. Original binding of brown leather, with pigskin back (a later addition); a thong of pigskin was used as a clasp, but the brass button used for a fastening (see extract from a bookseller's catalogue, f. ii) has been lost. Belonged to Edmond McClure, Canon of Bristol (sale-eat., Sotheby's, 6 June 1923, lot 783).
