HOURS, etc., in Latin. Contents:-(1) Hours of the Virgin, incomplete, lacking the beginning of Matins. According to the Abbé V. Leroquais (see Add. MS. 43688 Z), the use is that of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. f. 1;-(2) "Hic incipit Salutatio sancte Marie": a devotion to the Virgin consisting, besides ordinary suffrages, of the Magnificat with two prayers followed by the first fourteen of the Gradual Psalms (Pss. cxix-cxxxii) and the Magnificat divided into five parts by prayers based on the Five Joys of the Virgin. It appears to have been composed for a lady, since a prayer on f. 28 mentions the psalms "quos ego indigna et peccatrix decantare cupio." f. 27 b;-(3) "Hic incipiunt ore (sic) de sancto spiritu." f. 35;-(4) "Hic incipit (sic) quinque psalmos (sic) de plagis": a devotion consisting of Pss. xcix, cxxii, cxxiv, cxxx , cl, each followed by a prayer to one of the Five Wounds of Christ, the first beg. "O Redemptor mundi qui spineam coronam non dubitasti portare pro humani generis salute." f. 41 b;-(5) Penitential Psalms. f. 43;-
(6) Litany. The occurrence of the following English saints is worthy of mention:-Thomas of Canterbury, Alphege, Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward, king and martyr. "ut episcopos et abbates magistrum et priores nostros et cunctas congregationes illis commissas in sancta religione conservare digneris" and "ut gentem paganam dextera potencie tue comprimere digneris" (we V. Leroquais, Les Livres d'Heures MSS. de la Bibliothèque Nationale, i, p. 232) do not occur here. f. 48;-(6) Office of the Dead, of the use of St. John of Jerusalem (see Add.-M8.43688Z). f.50;-(7) In a later hand, incipits of Psalms divided into six categories, viz.:-
Conpuncionis, Co[m]passionis, Humiliacionis, Deuocionis, Rectitudinis, Diuine laudis. f. 68 b;-(8) Memorials in late 14th cent. hands, viz.:-of SS.
