MISCELLANEOUS works in French, viz.:-
1. "Le Siege de Rhodes": an account of the Turkish siege in 1480, translated anonymously into French from Guillaume Caoursin's Obsidionis Rhodie Urbis Descriptio. The translator, who has added a preface and inserted chapters and chapter-headings, states that he undertook the work for "Jaques Calliot, cheualier de lordre de Jherusalem, commandeur de Brabant et du Liege, seigneur de Chanteraine et et (sic) gouuerneur des commanderies de Flandres, Hault Auesnes, et Escharpigny (sc. Eterpigny)." Some account of Calliot (d. 1487) is given by E. Gachet, "Essai sur le bailliage d'Avalterre et sur les commanderies en Belgique," pp. 41, 42, in Comptes- Rendus Comm. Roy. d'Histoire, xv (Brussels, 1849). For the history of the above commanderies see also E. Mannier, Ordre de Malte: Les Commanderies du Grand-Prieuré de France, 1872. Preface beg. "Affin desmouuoir et inciter," text beg. "Auant que jescripue:" f. 1.
2. "Listoire de Troye abregee": an abridgement in alexandrine couplets of the Historia Trojana of Guido delle Colonne, beg. "Jason et Hercules vers Colcos sen aloyent." For other copies see Lansdowne MS. 380, ff. 36-39 b, and Add. MS. 19965, ff. 100-106 b, and cf. Långfors, Les Incipit des Poèmes Français antérieurs au xvi^e siècle, p. 174. Followed (f. 57 b) by the names of Priam's five legitimate sons with their allegorical significance and by two epitaphs, one on Achilles (two hexameters) beg. "Hectoris Eachides dormitor (sic)," the other on Hector (one hexameter) beg. "Troum protector." f. 52.
3. "Extrait des grandes ystoires troyennes": three stanzas in the scheme a b a b b a (c) b a (c), the first on the judgement of Paris. Beg. "Paris es boys de chasser mat et las." f. 58.
4. "Ensuit le prouffit et utilite que chescune personne peut auoir pour oyr la messe": an expansion of the common Virtutes Missae (cf. The Lay Folks Mass Book, E.E.T.S., 1879, p. 366, Add. MS. 39323, and Cat. of Irish MSS. in Brit. Mus., ii, p. 555), translated into French verse, Latin and French texts alternating. Two sections on 11. 59 b, 60 are assigned to "Magister Jacobus de Pavia," who is called "huius operis factor" and "qui hoc opus composuit,"
presumably the compiler of the original Latin. Another copy was in Lansd. MS. 380, f. 147 b, but only the title now remains. Beg. " Notate verba : Cy peut on veoir et sauoir." Cf. no. 13566 in Brunet, Manuel du Libraire. f. 59.
5. " Le doctrinal des filles " : poem in thirty-four stanzas of the scheme a b b a, beg. " Fille pour faire bon tresor." Another copy is in Lansd. MS. 380, ff. 6-8. No. 13479 in Brunet. f. 64 b.
6. "Ballade," beg. "Quest deuenu Dauid et Salmon" (sic), by [Eustache Deschamps]. Printed in OEuvres, iii (ed. Soc. Anc. Textes Francais), p. 113. f. 68. Paper, with vellum covers; ff. 1 + 68. 8.7/8 in. x 6.1/8 in. Early xvi cent. Gatherings of 8 leaves (i^10, vi^10), with catchwords. On f. 1 are the leonine quatrains beg. "Vir videas quid tu iubeas dum magnus haberis" as in Lansd. MS. 380, f. 8, and "Flos florum, fons ortorum, regina polorum," while on f. 50 b is the dialogue (four lines) on the Virgin birth between the Devil and St. Bernard beg. "Nunquam natura mutauit sic sua jura," assigned to a heretic and St. Anselm in Royal MS. 8 A. iv, f. 1 b. Two distichs also on f. 50 b, beg. "Sicut ver flores, flos fructum, fructus odores" and "Rusticus est vere qui turlpia de inuliere." The vellum covers are of English origin and preserve a date, Michaelmas 22 Edw. IV [1482]. "Dyrham Park" is pencilled on the cover, but the book does not occur in the sale-cat. (Sotheby's, 25 Apr. 1910). From the stock of Messrs. J. and J. Leighton (Sotheby's, 13 Dec. 1923, part of lot 6245 ; see 41061).
