ff. 1r-2v: Letter from Florimond Robertet, seigneur du Fresne, Secretary of State, to Sébastien de l'Aubespine, Bishop of Limoges, Franch ambassador to Philip II of Spain; Fontainebleau, 28 July 1560. In French. Robertet is disappointed at the hard conditions of the recent Treaty of Edinburgh (6 July), and desires the bishop to procure two pair of silk stockings which he has promised to the young Queen (Mary Stuart, wife of Francis II).

Binding: Green moroccan leather portfolio by Riviere with gold tooling and gold-stamped name of the document in the centre of the front: 'Florimond Robertet (Secretary of State to Francois II): letter to Sebastien de L'Aubespine (Bishop of Limoges) concerning Mary Stuart and the Treaty of Edinburgh (1560)'. Within is an internal folder with the letter and attached documents, with green watered silk cover, and within that the letter and accompanying documents have been bound within a maroon booklet. From the descriptions in the sales catalogues of 1917 and 1924, the placing of the document within the portfolio comes between the two.

Provenance:
Left by Sèbastian de l’Aubespine (d. 1582) to his nephew Guillaume de l'Aubespine, Baron de Chateauneuf. It remained in the hands of Comtes de l'Aubespine until the comte sold the chateaue de Sully, and the archive, to M. de Pontoise, who owned it when it was published in 1841.
Lot 219 in Sotheby's sale-cat., 1 Mar. 1917, where it formed part of a collection compiled to illustrate Henri Bouchot, Catherine de Médicis (Paris, 1899).
Sale of goods of J. Pearson & Co., Sotheby's, 23-26 June 1924, lot 653: purchased by the British Museum.
