Two LATIN PLAYS, of unknown authorship, viz.
(1) "Canutus Magno Maior, Siue Innocentia de Ambitione Victrix": a dramatised account of the end of Canute IV, King of Denmark, based, according to the Argument (f. 2), on "Hermoldus" [i.e. Helmoldus, Cronica Slavorum], c. 51, and Saxo Grammaticus, lib. 13. Written in iambic trimeters. Beg. "Heu lacrimos (l. lacrimosos) Martis inuisi iocos," ends "Quicunque scandit Magnus, hic minor cadet." f. 1;-(2) An allegorical piece, entitled "Clearchus Furens Siue Peccator omnis tortor immanis sui." Beg. "Quies, o inquieta ! heu fluctuo dubio natat," ends "Peceator omnis Tortor Immanis Sui." Chiefly in iambic trimeters, with choral interludes. The colophon reads "Ad Maiorem Dei, Deiparæ, Stæ que Eulaliæ V: M: Gloriam." A note on f. 54, "Desunt Nonnulla," proves the MS. to be a copy. f. 34. Paper; ff. iv + 69. Octavo. xvii cent. Printed library-label, a ram passant beneath a Viscount's coronet (probably Viscount Gage, cf. 41181), with number "Case A. Shelf 2.," 18th-19th cent. (f. i). Bought at Puttick's with 41181 (see above).
