"THE COMPOSSICION Booke of Conought": transcript by John Moore (f. 126 b), circ. 1700, of the original inquisitions and indentures drawn up for the assessment of the composition of the taxes of Connaught (including co. Clare, then part of Connaught) under Sir John Perrott, Lord Deputy of Ireland (1584-1588), in 1585. The original documents were in the Public Record Office of Ireland and were presumably destroyed in the burning of the Four Courts in 1924. There are two contemporary copies, substantially identical, of an abstract of the Composition in the Public Record Office, London (cf. Cal. of State Papers, Ireland, 1574-1585, p. 582) and in the Carew MSS. at Lambeth Palace, vol. 614, p. 15 sqq. The substance of the Indentures for Connaught (exclusive of co. Clare) was printed from the originals by J. Hardiman, Chhorographical Description of West Connaught (Irish Archwological Society, 1846), p. 309 and a complete edition of the present MS. is in preparation (1936) by A. Martin Freeman for the Irish Manuscripts Commission, Dublin. Paper; ff. i + 126. Folio. Circ. 1700. Binding of boards covered with vellum (the vellum covers preserved). Puttick and Simpson's sale-cat., 25 Mar. 1925, part of lot 218.
