Add MS 41194

REGISTER of general orders issued to the French Army in Egypt; 1 Vendémiaire-5 jour complémentaire, an 7 [22 Sept. 1798-21 Sept. 1799]. Fr. Until 6 Fructidor [23 Aug.] the orders are usually in the name of General [Louis] Alexandre Berthier [afterwards Prince of Neuehâtel and Wagram], Chief of Staff to Napoléon Bonaparte. Extracts from the majority of these (ff. 1-137) have been printed by C. E. L. M. de Taffanel de la Jonquière in L'Expédition d'Egypte (1899-1907), tom. 3-5, passim, clearly from another copy of the register, which is probably preserved amongst the French war archives (cf. ibid., 1, p. 7). Other extracts will be found in Correspondance de Napoléon I, v (1860), passim. Berthier is later replaced by General [François Étienne] Damas, Chief of Staff to the new Commander-in-chief, General J. B. Kléber. The orders were apparently issued in printed form : a signed copy of the first is in a volume of papers concerning the Egyptian campaign, pressmark 1296. h. 12, in the Dept. of Printed Books (cf. also 8825. h. 29, a collection of Egyptian army orders for the succeeding year).
