41206-41252. CORRESPONDENCE and papers, official and private, of the Right Hon. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (till 1872 Campbell), G.C.B. 1895; Prime Minister 1905-1908. He was Financial Secretary to the War Office Nov. 1871-Feb. 1874, April 1880- May 1882; Secretary to the Admiralty May 1882-Oct. 1884 Chief Secretary for Ireland Oct. 1884-June 1885; Secretary of State for War Feb.-July 1886, Aug. 1892-June 1895; Leader of the Liberal Party (in opposition) Feb. 1899; Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury Dec. 1905-April 1908. He died 22 Apr. 1908. The correspondence consists principally of letters addressed to Campbell-Bannerman, his own side of the correspondence being represented by drafts or typewritten copies. There is, however, a series of original letters written by him to his cousin, James Campbell of Tullichewan (Add. 41246, ff. 1-78). Great use has been made of this collection by Mr. J. A. Spender in his Life (2 vols., 1923). Forty-,six volumes and one roll, classified as follows:-

Journals and diaries (41247-41251). E. Letters and memoranda relating to Campbell-Bannerman and his correspondence (41252).

The names of all the writers are given in the Index to this Catalogue. Presented in 1923 (together with other correspondence and papers reserved at present from public use) by John, 1st Lord Pentland (d. 1925), one of the trustees of Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman's will, and the sole legatee of his correspondense and papers.
